They were among 36 in a militant group detained by Malaysian police over their suspected involvement in extremist activities linked to the Islamic State.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail giving details of the militant group to reporters at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

PETALING JAYA: Three Bangladeshi nationals, deported from Malaysia on suspicion of involvement in militant activities, have been arrested and detained after they arrived home on Friday.

They were taken into custody by members of the Bangladesh anti-terrorism unit, produced in court the same day and ordered to be detained, according to the Bangladesh online newspaper bdnews24.com.

Bangladesh anti-terrorism chief Akkas Uddin Bhuiyan was quoted by bdnews24.com as saying that the process of filing cases against the three was under way. The authorities were still verifying their background, he said.

The trio were among 36 detained in Malaysia between May and June for their involvement in a radical militant movement linked to the Islamic State (IS).

Last week, home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said 15 of the 36 had been issued deportation orders, while 16 others are still under investigation for their suspected involvement in the militant movement.

Saifuddin said five were involved in terrorism and had been charged in Shah Alam, Selangor, and Johor.

On Friday, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said the 36 were believed to be part of a militant group comprising between 100 and 150 members, all Bangladeshi migrant workers employed in factories, construction sites, and petrol stations across Malaysia.

The Bangladesh government said today that officials of its high commission in Malaysia were communicating closely with Malaysian authorities.

“Bangladesh once again reiterates its firm stand against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism and militancy and it remains ready to extend full cooperation to the Malaysian authorities in this regard,” the Bangladesh foreign ministry said in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 4, 2025: Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohd Khalid Ismail yesterday confirmed that as many as 36 Bangladeshi citizens have been arrested for directly involved in radical militant movements that witnessed extremist understanding and ideology of terrorism.

He said the IS (Islamic State)-linked Bangladeshi militant cell in Malaysia channelled funds to Syria and Bangladesh.

So, is it still wise for the Government and Malaysia to continue to accept “sensitive” foreigners, like Bangladeshis, Palestinians and other Islamic militant-linked nationals, into the country?

THE Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) have dismantled a foreign militant cell composed of Bangladeshi nationals accused of supporting Islamic State (IS) operations by recruiting followers and funnelling funds to networks in Syria and Bangladesh.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed on Thursday that intelligence suggests between 100 and 150 individuals were involved in the movement, which had been operating within Malaysia’s industrial and service sectors.

“Those more deeply involved in the group will face further action, including court charges under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012,” he told a press conference at Bukit Aman.

He said that those with minimal involvement would be deported, while the remainder may face prosecution under Malaysia’s counterterrorism laws.

To date, 36 Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested in connection with the group. All were employed in factories, construction sites, and service-related jobs. No Malaysians were among the suspects, Khalid confirmed.

The group reportedly exploited digital platforms and encrypted messaging apps to disseminate extremist propaganda and organise secret activities.

“They used social media as a platform to spread radical and extremist ideology and to attract more members,” said Khalid. “They also made extensive use of WhatsApp and Telegram to disseminate propaganda and organise secret activities, including oath-taking ceremonies and religious study sessions.”

Khalid warned that further arrests are expected as authorities work to dismantle the broader network and prevent Malaysia from being used as a logistics or transit hub for regional extremism.

“This is essential not only for national security but to safeguard Malaysia’s diplomatic relations and international standing,” he said. - July 4, 2025

– TVS
