Gerakan digs its political grave deeper

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6, 2023: Malaysians really wonder where Gerakan - a former Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition party member - is heading to in politics.

It has not been able to win a single seat in state assemblies and the 222-seat Parliament for three consecutive general elections.

Party leaders dug their own political grave when they condemned Umno and BN after General Election 15 (GE15), opting to work with the Taliban-like PAS-dominated Perikatan Nasional (PN) which is helmed by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Obviously, Gerakan was quick in its decision to join PN, thinking PN would form the Government after winning a significant number of seats.

That was a huge blunder, a folly that it is now paying its price, falling into deeper irrelevance in Malaysian politics.

One really wonders how Gerakan - a multi-racial party - could even think of supporting the racial and religious extremist PAS and its policies to form the Government to rule multi-racial Malaysia.

The party and its leaders are now political zombies living hypocritically resorting to only paying political lip-service.

Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong said Bersatu and PAS leaders should not be lending support to a race-based movement.

So, what are you going to do about it? Obviously nothing as it is politically helpless and hapless.

Do you think PAS and Bersatu care a damn what Gerakan says?

What Gerakan needs are new leaders with new political directions to try and win the confidence of Malaysians. They can only hope to succeed by first leaving PN. No?

No News Is Bad News reproduces a report published by Free Malaysia Today on what is Gerakan saying about the “Malay Proclamation”:

Wrong for PN leaders to sign Dr M’s ‘Malay Proclamation’, says Gerakan No 2

Oh Tong Keong says Bersatu and PAS leaders should not be lending support to a race-based movement.

PETALING JAYA: A Gerakan leader has spoken out against several of his Perikatan Nasional colleagues for supporting the “Malay Proclamation” initiated by Dr Mahathir Mohamad, describing it as “inappropriate”.

Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong said the Bersatu and PAS leaders should be working to help address economic issues instead of lending support to a race-based movement.

“We can’t stop them from doing what they want to do because this is a democratic country. But the issue at hand is the people’s economy. The prices of goods are rising but the people don’t have enough money in their pockets.

“(The opposition should) share their ideas with the government so we can have better policies for the people and their salaries will rise. Stop playing politics,” he told FMT.

However, Oh said this was his personal view and he could not speak for Gerakan as a whole.

Gerakan is among the component parties of PN, alongside PAS and the Muhyiddin Yassin-led Bersatu.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and several other party leaders had signed Mahathir’s “Malay Proclamation” in the presence of the former prime minister to signify their support for his call for the Malays to unite and “save” the community.

Three Bersatu leaders – deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, information chief Razali Idris and Supreme Council member Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid – have also signed the document in their personal capacities.
