Just who is Lau and Gerakan trying to kid?
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11, 2023: Just who is Gerakan president Dominic Lau trying to kid?
Only his party members will believe him, not Malaysians.
Lau said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s views that non-Malays and non-Muslims were the “biggest plunderers” was only expressing his personal views on the matter and did not represent Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Is that so? But Hadi is the No. 2 in PN!
For Lau to continue behaving like a political oxymoron is to dig the party’s grave deeper.
Already, the past four general elections has clearly shown that Gerakan is politically irrelevant to Malaysians.
It could not win a single state or parliamentary seat. Wasn’t that enough to show that Gerakan needs to change to win back the confidence of Malaysians? Obviously not, with Lau who continues to conduct politics as “business as usual”, as in the past decades.
If Umno leaders can change to try and win back the confidence of the majority of Malaysians in politics, in the interest of the rakyat (people) and country, why can’t Gerakan or even MIC and MCA for that matter.

Dominic Lau says he will talk to Abdul Hadi Awang to understand how his perception came to be and how they can dispel such notions.
PETALING JAYA: Gerakan does not share PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s views that non-Malays and non-Muslims were the “biggest plunderers”.
Gerakan president Dominic Lau said Hadi was only expressing his personal views on the matter.
“His views on non-Malays and non-Muslims being the ‘biggest plunderers’ are merely his own, based on his perception and personal experiences.
“They do not represent the overall stance of Perikatan Nasional,” Lau told FMT.
He said, however, he will raise the matter with Hadi to understand how his perception came to be in the first place, and how they can work together to dispel such notions.
“From there, we can move forward and work together to build confidence between our respective communities,” he said.
Lau also said it was about “voicing out the right thing at the right time”, adding that history has shown that every race and community has its share of bad apples.
“But the actions of a few don’t define the entire race and community,” he said.
He said some segments of the non-Malay communities are aggrieved by Hadi’s allegations, but believes the people are discerning in selecting a government that best represents their interests.
“The performance of our elected and appointed representatives will be the deciding factor of the people’s support for us,” he said, when asked if he was concerned about the direction taken by Hadi and PAS.
Yesterday, DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng urged Malaysians to lodge police reports against Hadi for making repeated claims against the non-Malays, saying it threatens national unity.
This comes after Hadi claimed in a Facebook post that the Malays were being “openly conned” and that non-Malays and non-Muslims were the “biggest plunderers”.
In August last year, Hadi had also cast non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras as being at the root of corruption, saying they were “the majority of those involved in ruining the country’s politics and economy”.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party’s enemies have incessantly tried to spread propaganda against it.
PETALING JAYA: Ahead of Umno’s 77th anniversary, its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has called on members to build a more progressive party with fresh ideas to face the opposition’s toxic politics.
Zahid claimed that Umno’s enemies have incessantly tried to spread propaganda against the party because they were uneasy with the party’s position, being part of the unity government.
He urged the members to reignite the party’s spirit and ideals in accordance with its historical roots.
“Let’s move forward with new political governance that is mature and fresh so that Umno becomes a party with discipline, one that puts the party’s interest before individual interest.
“(Umno must be) a party that is competent and efficient, and one that can prove to the people that it will not let them down,” he said in a statement today.
Zahid said Umno started out as a movement to champion noble causes and not as an “exclusive” club for the elite, the wealthy or businessmen.
He said diversity, in terms of race, creed, origins and professions, should be considered a strength instead of cause for division.
“Let us forge friendships in the spirit of togetherness in order to build a unified party,” he said.
He also reminded his party that the 15th General Election showed them that democracy is not a given but a right of the people.
“The limits of democracy are not determined by those in power, but through the people,” he said. - FMT
