Penang CM Chow declines to contest state DAP polls

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4, 2024: Although outgoing Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow has proven to be a “lacklustre/mediocre” chief minister, at least he still has principles and integrity.

Unlike many politicians who strive to hang on to power until kingdom come, Chow knows when and how to quit/retire or withdraw gracefully.

Today, Chow announced that he has declined to contest the Penang DAP polls on Sept 22.

This means he will not defend the state DAP chairmanship, a post typically held by the Penang chief minister.

Midway into his second and final term of his chief ministership, Chow said his position as chief minister would be decided by the party.

Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow said he had rejected his nomination to the state party polls, which he was notified of through a letter from DAP’s headquarters on Aug 27.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow has announced that he will not contest in the upcoming state party elections on Sept 22.

He said he had rejected his nomination to the polls, which he was notified of through a letter from DAP’s headquarters on Aug 27.After due consideration, I have decided not to contest in the polls. Since I’m not contesting, you know what this means, he told reporters in Komtar here.

Chow said he will complete his term as Penang chief minister, adding that this was affirmed by DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook.

My position (as chief minister) is decided by the party, so I leave it to them, Chow said.

Asked if this would affect his position as Penang chief minister, Chow said it was ultimately up to the DAP central leadership.

“I was appointed to the position by the party, and that question must be answered by the party. When I was appointed (in August 2023 for a second term), DAP secretary-general (Loke Siew Fook) had commented that there would be no mid-term change.

But this is up to the party, and maybe the party will comment about this, he said, coyly.

Chow said that when he was appointed to a second term as chief minister, Loke had asked him to work on a succession plan in Penang.

He said that not defending his Penang DAP chairmanship was the first step in this succession plan.

“The timing is perfect because the new Penang DAP chairman will have more than three years to lead and prepare the party to face the next general election.I trust that the delegates will elect a strong state committee to continue the party’s political mission in the state, he said.

The Batu Kawan MP also pointed out that he would still be a DAP vice-chairman despite bowing out of the state party leadership.

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook says Chow Kon Yeow’s decision to not contest the state party elections will not affect the administration of the Penang government.

Loke Siew Fook said the decision to allow Chow Kon Yeow to complete his second term as chief minister was made in accordance with Penang’s state constitution.

PETALING JAYA: Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow will continue to serve as chief minister despite his decision to not contest the state party elections on Sept 22, says the party’s secretary-general Loke Siew Fook.

In a statement, Loke said Chow’s decision will not affect the administration of the state government as the latter will complete his term.

This is in accordance with the state’s constitution, which limits the chief minister’s tenure to a maximum of two terms, he said in a statement.

Loke also said he respects Chow’s decision, made in the spirit of leadership renewal within Penang DAP after leading the state chapter for 25 years.

Earlier, Chow said he had rejected his nomination to stand in the elections despite being informed in a letter from DAP’s headquarters on Aug 27 that he had been nominated.
