KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13, 2024: Former two-time finance minister Daim Zainuddin, 86, died this morning.

Daim, a crony of racist former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad (Dr M), was facing multiple court charges related to income tax arrears and kleptocracy, prior to his death.

PETALING JAYA: Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin passed away this morning at the age of 86.

Daim’s lawyer, Gurdial Singh Nijar, confirmed his death.

Daim served as finance minister twice. His first stint was from 1984 to 1991 under former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s first administration, during which he played a key role in managing Malaysia’s economy and implementing structural adjustments.

He later returned for a second term briefly from 1999 to 2001, again under Mahathir, to address economic issues following the Asian financial crisis.

PETALING JAYA: Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin passed away this morning at the age of 86.

Daim’s lawyer, Gurdial Singh Nijar, confirmed his death.

“Yes, he passed on this morning. His funeral will be held today,” he told FMT.

Bernama reported that he was admitted to a private hospital here two weeks ago.

Daim served as finance minister twice. The first stint was from 1984 to 1991 under former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s first administration, during which he played a key role in managing Malaysia’s economy and implementing structural adjustments.

He later returned for a second term from 1999 to 2001, again under Mahathir, to address economic issues following the Asian financial crisis.

Earlier this year, Daim and his wife, Naimah Khalid, claimed trial in court on charges of failing to comply with the terms of a notice from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission regarding asset declaration.

Daim was accused of failing to declare his ownership in 38 companies, 19 plots of land in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Kedah and Kuala Lumpur, as well as six properties.

He was also alleged to have failed to declare his ownership of Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad and Amanah Saham Nasional accounts as well as seven luxury vehicles.

Last month, the sessions court ordered Daim to be present at a continued hearing over whether he should undergo a mental evaluation to determine if he was fit to stand trial.

Judge Azura Alwi had fixed Nov 20 to hear further submissions.

FORMER Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, 86, died at the Assunta Hospital this morning.

This was confirmed by Daim's lawyer, Datuk Gurdial Singh Nijar.

"He had a stroke recently and was in the intensive care unit," he said.

Daim, the businessman turned politician, served as finance minister between 1984 to 1991 and later between 1998 to 2001.

He is from Alor Setar, Kedah, and also served as a member of Parliament for five terms between 1982 and 2004.

He was also known to have played a pivotal role in steering Malaysia through several economic challenges, including the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

He was first elected Kuala Muda MP in 1982, a year after his long-time ally, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad became prime minister.

Later, he would contest and win the Merbok seat, defending it for Umno and Barisan Nasional for four consecutive terms.

Born to a clerk in the Kedah civil service, Daim was the youngest of 13 siblings.

In addition to his political endeavours, Daim was an academic achiever, having earned a PhD from the University of Malaya at the age of 81, and his thesis on the New Economic Policy of the Soviet Union demonstrated his lifelong commitment to economic studies and policy development.
