Dept explains why STPM top scorer missed out on UM accountancy spot
The higher education department says Edward Wong ranked 1,129th among eligible applicants for just 85 places under the public intake system.
Top STPM scorer Edward Wong narrowly missed out on a place in the highly competitive accountancy programme at Universiti Malaya under the public UPU intake.
PETALING JAYA: The higher education department (JPT) has clarified why an STPM top scorer from Penang did not secure a place in Universiti Malaya’s accountancy course under the government’s Unit Pusat Universiti (UPU) pathway.
JPT said Edward Wong, who achieved a perfect 4.0 CGPA and scored 99.9% for co-curricular activities, was ranked 1,129th among 2,291 eligible applicants for UM, while only 85 places for accountancy were available in his top choice university this year.
It said Wong was instead offered a place in a Bachelor of Management with Honours programme at a leading research university, his fifth choice.
JPT also provided his rankings in other public universities: Universiti Putra Malaysia (1,724/4,154, 100 seats), Universiti Utara Malaysia (1,288/2,595, 350 seats), and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (1,062/2,292, 55 seats).
“Accordingly, the candidate was offered a place based on merit and programme choices, just like all other applicants,” the department said in a statement.
JPT said that all UPUOnline decisions were system-generated based on merit scores for each course, dismissing claims of flaws or gaps in the system.
“At the same time, JPT remains open to feedback and suggestions on ways to improve the existing system,” it said.
Wong’s case gained public attention after MCA president Wee Ka Siong raised it at a press conference where he called the centralised UPU admission process “flawed” and “unfair”.
He noted that Wong was later accepted into the same UM accountancy course through open intake, but the fee of RM83,800 was nearly 10 times higher than the RM8,300 UPU-subsidised route.
JPT also said it had fulfilled its pledge to place all STPM students with a 4.0 CGPA in public universities.
It said of the 1,255 applicants with perfect scores, 1,249 had been placed in universities, with six more waiting for final paperwork.
“The UPUOnline appeal consultation counter is open for candidates seeking further information, including those who were unsuccessful. It is located at the atrium of the higher education ministry, Putrajaya, until Sept 12,” it added.
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9, 2025: When a country rejects the brainy and talent based on kulitfication (skin colour) or race, the end result is a severe brain drain and imminent collapse of socio-economic progress.
And that is exactly what is happening to multi-racial Malaysia’s future.
Malaysia is not only left with half-baked graduates, even the half-baked graduates are running to Singapore for employment … even as toilet cleaners!
This is the clearest sign of collapse and why tiny Singapore, an island republic with zero natural resources, is today way ahead of Malaysia in terms of socio-economic progress and wealth:
And, yes! Many are disappointed that they did not get the university or course of their choice. But there are many high scorers who were rejected without any valid reasons.
Prof Dr James Chin posted this on Facebook:

Same sh*t every year. Not surprised the PC was held at MA Hq. In the old days, it was the Rocket who would raise the issue of race-based admission and the Govt would deny it. The role now reversed. The bad news is that there is no solution as long as the quota system is there. The quota system is there as long as KMI is the ruling ideology.

Be it DAP or MCA, when sitting in opposition bench they never miss any injustice against the minority to rally for support.
Sorry Prof have to agree with you ,it has been happening for decades and will continue with the rapid rise in the Bumiputra population, this student should look to China,Taiwan and Singapore for future studies ,they will definitely take him in.Brain drain will continue and the country will regress further with emphasis on ketuanan Melayu narrative
Yes,perfectly put,SAME BULLSHIT,SAME SHIT,SAME MGMT...
POINTLESS TO FIGHT N CHALLENGE D SAME TYPE N KIND OF PPL WHO ONLY SEE COLOUR O RACE..ADMIT IT..TIS IS D REAL FREAKING APARTHEID MSIA IS PRACTISING....D PRIME IS COLOUR BLIND?
Had the same experience like him. My friend who only get 2 Principal accepted into university whereas myself with 5 principal rejected. We are going to have serious brain drain.
Prof. You want to be nice by saying " still believe the Ctry will be fair" Those of in 60'sw have missed and sidelined. 1 whole generation. Yes, ovetime there was some flikering light of hope/ opportunites in between. U and I know it is long battle, casualties and sacrificies along the rocky path. Reality the situation requires to equip to look forward swim againt the "flood waters"
Why must he have to go for that particular University? Why he couldn't apply from other foundation exp kuok foundation, Sunway foundation etc.
Translation in case need better understanding:
Aiyo, so many people, including me also, fast fast feel pity when see this case. STPM 4.0 student, merit 99.9%, still cannot masuk UM Accounting wor.
Every year sure got this kind of headline one, straightaway people think: “eh, discrimination ah?” But sometimes must come back to reality a bit lah.
Ya, he memang get 4 flat. But the subject he take is Pengajian Am, Econs, Account, and ICT. Okay la, meet requirement… but only minimum mah.
Compare with matric student take full set, Account, Econs, Maths, Business, you sendiri say lah, who more “matching” for Accounting course?
Somemore UM that side, all applicant pointer 3.8-4.0 above, slot only 300-400 per year, but applicant thousands leh. The real difference is subject combo lor. Maths and Econs not compulsory, but they give you big advantage. ICT? General Studies? Not much help in Accounting mah.
And hor, not like he totally tak dapat apa-apa. He actually dapat his 5th choice. That one he sendiri tick when fill UPU form. System already warn, if you get any choice you put, don’t hope can appeal. Now belum tekan “accept” already make noise. That course also not bad leh, USM Apex Uni somemore… a lot of people want, also cannot get.
To be fair, call a spade a spade lah. If he got more relevant subject combo (Maths + Econs), then still kena reject, that one we can really shout until table flip. But with his current subject set, logically ranking sure jatuh one lor.
The part make people sien is when politician masuk campur. Say “this not race issue.” Okay fine. If really not race, then also check Malay and Indian student high pointer but same fate. Anyone shout for them same volume? Or just choose certain case ’cos ngam with political narrative now?
End of the day, story very simple lah, meet minimum requirement not confirm get. Your own choice got consequence. If really want fight for “top student,” then fight for all lah, don’t pick and choose by race or politic.
Just my two cents only.
Disagree also never mind lah.
Cnp
Jangan pupuk diri korang menjadi kaum yg suka playvictim.
While I agree that there are discriminations in Malaysia, to be fair, he did not take Math T or S, which is one of the mandatory combination subject with Accounting. Also he was offered a placement in USM, which is one of his selected option when filling the application.. So let say, if UM offer a placement for him due to political pressures, that will create another controversy.. How about the rest of the 4.00 students who scored their Math & Account subjects? It will be unfair to them..
Rocket now in comfort zone, don’t rock the boat.
Btw, it was always MCA , the ‘ Chong mo yin ‘ who fought for Justice.
What's wrong with the education ministry and the govt? Justice for zara movement didn't happen without reasons.
He did not take mathematics as core subject. He tooks only the easy subject, econ, acc, ict, pengajian am. Then, apply to UM, the top 1st uni in the country with its tight competition. Its like you apply for medic to become a dr, but did not take biology. Can ma ? In your special universe can la.
The government should not blame them for brain drain. Preference of race quotas does not mean you gave the best brains.
Just go to Singapore. After all singapore is everything malaysia was meant to be.
Garam Penternak Borneotex Traders
Apply in spore better. My brother inlaw use to tell me high scores from malaysia get some space there. Kuti also study there when power started race card education back at home..
Kulification at work.
Exports brain and import brawns. How smart is that?
Just to preserve the political power. But impoverises Malaysia in terms of skills development. How can you scale the technology ladder by handicapping yourself?
The quota system needs to go.
Reality, Bolehland pies are meant for distribution, not competition.
Hmm...Fair to all...? U sure...?
I was at the court yesterday to ask why I got a police saman. Never had a chance to say or ask a single thing since the first court attendance. Only thing allowed to do is answer if I admit guilt or not... Repeatedly...
Case got postponed twice because they cannot produce a good reason from the police side. So I was told in court the case is ????(Can't hear properly-i assume abandoned/closed) Then was told to go get the paper result at the registration counter.
I woke up at 6, waited from 8.30 til 1pm for my turn outside the court. Asked the cop inside the court & was told polis saman is the last after all other cases like jpj saman, dbkl...etc.
Yet when I went to the counter for the paper results, I was told, in the computer system, there's a warrant tangkap for me because I failed to appear in court...!
What rubbish..?
After a few talks, I got the warrant tangkap removed, but the paper they gave me says DNAA-I'm being let go without being released...!
See, I went to court to ask & clarify the reason why I was given a ticket. BUT...I was immediately treated like I'm some kinda criminal...
Does this look like abuse of power & terrorism...? Or does everyone think this is what u paid tax for...?
Ask UTAR to offer scholarship.
Come to SG pls...
sad but true!!never ending story!!
Only will happen when changes in population
They want to go through another market price lane. Access through paycheck. UM tell us how selection was done. Transparency. Dont teach it. Practice it.
Agree with you Prof.
SG is waiting for you
The six universities that rejected him must be closed forever. There is no place for such universities which rejected the cream of our country and force them to leave the country for good.
He didn’t take Mathematic for his STPM subject combination, one of his accounting paper he didn’t get A. Not all 4.0 carries the same weight.
same story, different story teller and I wonder why.
Conclusion is : let's make all Chinese based political parties sitting in opposition bench. Then only they will fight for justice! ![]()
That's right Prof. DAP used to be outspoken on this issue while MCA were ignorant. Now the role is reverse. Pure hypocrisy at work.
Maybe every ethnic group must have their own fundings to finance students at both local or foreign universities, in addition to their vernacular schools, if the race base policy on education still exist.

Why We See Things Differently
Edward Wong, brilliant student, but denied opportunity to study in University Malaya. Dia kata nak jadi akauntan.
Tapi bila baca berita lebih sikit: [ Wong ketika ini hanya ditawarkan melanjutkan pengajian dalam bidang pengurusan di Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). ] (1)
So. Kecewa tak dapat masuk UM, tapi dapat masuk USM. Technically, ada tawaran la, cuma bukan universiti pilihan dia.
Jadi top komen dalam BM kata tak semua yang diminta semestinya dapat.
Meanwhile....
English version tanya: [ Dream Denied: STPM Top Scorer Asks 'How Good Must You Be?' ] (2)
Hah. See how the same media organisation presents information in a completely different manner?
Dalam BM, dia kecewa saja. Dalam BI, wahlau - denied his dream. Oh, such a cruel world.
Different way of presentation also leads to different ways of interpretation.
Top comment in English version: "Malaysia don’t need accountant to be too smart. Too smart, the politician cannot cari makan."
Aik. Apa terjadi kepada isu kecewa si Edward yang nak dapatkan tempat kat UM? Sistem tak adil pun tak dibincangkan. Terus cakap jangan telus sangat kalau nak jadi akauntan 'bagus'.
See what I say about Chinese minds being able to jump a few steps in thought processes? Haha.
Tapi itulah cara rakyat biasa nampak isu.
Saya pula pergi cari informasi mengenai kemasukan pelajar orang asing ke UM. Mungkin lah isu takde tempat untuk si Edward berkaitan.
Jadi menurut artikel CNA: [ Mr Chu is among a growing number of students from China who have applied to join Malaysian universities over the last five years. They made up about 38 per cent of more than 110,000 foreign students in the Southeast Asian nation last year. ] (3)
Mesti banyak China students kan sehingga UM nak buka cawangan untuk: “This will streamline Chinese student admissions, ensuring a seamless and high-quality selection process that will open doors for the brightest minds to study in Malaysia,” he said. (4)
See, everyone is so focused on the minutiae, they don't see the policy issues behind our problems.
Peace.)
one of the reasons why this country is going down the oxidation pond.
Sidelined?
He put USM in one of the option. He got USM.
He is already 25 years old.
The size of this drain is widening to a monsoon level ![]()
If only he's a Sarawakian, he won't have this problem ! He could even be chosen to a Foreign Elite University in UK or USA..
EVERY YEAR PLAY VICTIM, LOL
Every year it's the same story... Seems like Malaysia never learns... You always have cases of brilliant Chinese or Malay students denied their 'rightful' (is that even an appropriate word?) place, but never hear of a candidate from the dominant race complaining of such an issue... It's the most blatant form of discrimination in our country, and where the country continues to fail and build the basis of its failures...
Same old same old. Why do you think we have so many leave the country?

STPM CGPA 4.0
8 SEPTEMBER 2026
From Malaysiakini
https://m.malaysiakini.com/news/754552
Edward Wong, who scored a 4.0 CGPA in the STPM examination, had set his sights on becoming an accountant.
But his dream was shattered when six universities rejected his applications.
His story took a turn after he shared his disappointment on Facebook. The post quickly gained traction and drew the attention of MCA president Wee Ka Siong, who today stood beside Wong at a press conference at the party’s Kuala Lumpur headquarters.
Wong told reporters that he had hoped to pursue his accounting degree at Universiti Malaya (UM), the same university from which his sister had recently graduated.
“The reality is disappointing. Some doubt my abilities, some don’t believe in me, and some say they can’t help.
How excellent do we need to be to choose (the course of study we desire)?” he asked, adding that he would continue to appeal.
Wee urged UM to reconsider and grant the outstanding student his wish to pursue accounting, noting that Wong had instead only been offered a place in management studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
“He scored a CGPA of 4.0. His co-curricular participation is 9.9/10. Yet he failed to get a place in accounting.
“Wong took Accounting, Economics, General Studies, and ICT, scoring an A in all.
Unfortunately, however, he was not accepted to pursue accounting at the public universities he applied to,” Wee added.
According to the Ayer Hitam MP, other students with a CGPA of 3.8 had been offered the accounting course, but Wong was rejected.
“We appeal to UM to have pity on him, this is not about race,” Wee added.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Wong revealed that management was only his fifth choice, which he described as “neither my passion, nor my dream, nor the reward for my two years of struggle”.
After failing to secure a seat for accounting, Wong said he sought answers by contacting the University Central Unit (UPU) and the six universities.
“But the answers contradicted one another. Some said STPM, Matriculation, Asasi, and Diploma students compete in the same pool. Others said they are separate pools.
“If they are truly separate, why was I, with 99.90 percent merit, denied accounting? If they are the same, how can someone with near-perfect merit be entirely rejected?
“The big question remains: Is this system truly transparent, consistent, and fair?” he asked.
Wong noted that STPM is a rigorous journey that tests not only a student’s grasp of the syllabus but also their mental, physical, and emotional resilience.
We stay up late nights, rewrite essays again and again, and push ourselves far beyond our limits. We endure because we believe that Malaysia will reward hard work. But today, it feels as though that promise has been broken.
“I do not write this only for myself. I write because I know there are many other STPM students out there who may share the same fate. If even a near-perfect (score) student can be sidelined, what hope is left for the rest? What will become of STPM’s future?
“I still believe in Malaysia. I still believe this country can be fair to all. But fairness must be proven through action, not just words.
“Thank you for reading. This voice is not mine alone - it is the voice of every STPM student who longs for a system that is transparent, consistent, and truly fair,” he added.
