Instead of taking punitive action against ‘religious’ child molesters, Taliban-like PAS blames the press

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1, 2024: Many religious teachers have been exposed for allegedly molesting their pupils.

Yet, instead of taking punitive oe criminal action against the molesters, the Taliban-like PAS president blames the media.

Did the media teach the religious teachers to molest their pupils?

No News Is Bad News reproduces a commentary by columnist Mariam Mokhtar on the issue:

What will PAS do about immoral crimes in religious schools?

Mariam Mokhtar-01 Jun 2024, 09:30 AM

It is wrong for party president Abdul Hadi Awang to blame the press for ‘hyping’ such cases.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang claimed that some people despise Islam and its teachings because the media has the tendency to hype the immoral acts committed by teachers in religious and tahfiz schools.

Is he right? Does Islam get a bad press from reporters writing about the heinous crimes of religious teachers?

Hadi also claimed that only a handful of teachers are responsible for these crimes, but this is also wrong. There is no reason to justify the actions of these teachers.

Why does Hadi think the media is misrepresenting Islam? Is he embarrassed that teachers and wardens in religious schools have carried out these acts?

Every few days, we read stories about teachers in religious schools committing such crimes, and we also suspect that for every crime that has been committed, several others have not been reported; but where is the emotional storm from the public?

One teacher guilty of these acts against his charges is one too many. Hadi should initiate an investigation into why teachers of religious schools commit such crimes.

What is the track record of the school and have previous cases been covered up or fully investigated? Is the school mismanaged? Is there something more that we are not being told about the school and its teachers?

Parents will have put their trust in the teachers and schools to take care of their children. It is the last place where parents expect teachers to abuse this trust.

The safety, physical and mental health and also the future of these children are paramount. Can Hadi not see that?

Hadi’s comments about the media have shaken our confidence in religious leaders and wannabe politicians. Is he prioritising religious political power over the safety and mental health of our children?

We would welcome Hadi’s proposal to educate our children about sexual predators. At the moment, many parents and teachers are reluctant to support sex education in our schools because many believe that sex education is about free sex; but if children lack basic sex education in the government schools, how will they know that they are being groomed?

It is not just conservative Malays, because the same happens to non-Muslim families, too. How will children know that they are being abused especially when teachers have probably warned them to keep quiet and not invite God’s wrath?

Each time a heinous act is committed in religious and tahfiz schools, what is the feedback from parents, teachers and children, and also the general public? Are they too scared to make any comments because of the 3Rs?

How many cases of immoral acts by religious teachers have been successfully prosecuted? How many resulted in stiff punishment for the teachers? What punishment was meted out to those found guilty? Are the offending teachers placed on the “sex register list” so they can be monitored by the police?

These teachers should not be allowed to go near children again and certainly not to teach, but laws in Malaysia are lax.

There should be no cover-ups and we must not be afraid to report any wrongdoing, so that we are constantly improving and getting better to provide a safe environment for our children.

Both students and teachers must feel safe, and whistleblowing should be encouraged. Teachers or school employees should not feel that their jobs are threatened, and students should not fear being expelled for speaking out. People fear retaliation and this is what makes them reluctant to report crimes.

Parents would be interested to find out about the safety culture in these schools, and Hadi’s criticism of the press for highlighting these immoral acts has not helped.

So, how will religious parties like PAS handle immoral cases in schools?

MACC investigating Hannah Yeoh’s hubby?

Update

Let truth prevail on Asia Mobiliti issue, says Hannah

FMT Reporters-01 Jun 2024, 03:16 PM

The youth and sports minister says she had not commented earlier as the best way forward is for the authorities to investigate the claims.

Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh said she welcomed the MACC’s probe into the Selangor demand-responsive transit project, adding that ‘Malaysia deserves nothing less’.

PETALING JAYA: Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh says she is leaving it to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to probe into the Selangor government’s appointment of her husband’s firm to run a public transport service in the state.

Yeoh said she welcomed the MACC’s probe into the Selangor demand-responsive transit (DRT) issue, adding that “Malaysia deserves nothing less” than the truth.

“Now that the probe has started, I want to see truth and vindication come out of this investigation,” she said in a Facebook post.

She also said it would not be proper for her to comment as it may be construed as an interference with the ongoing investigation.

“In fact it was for this reason I had not said anything sooner as in my view the best way forward in dealing with such claims is to leave it to the relevant authorities to investigate them,” she said.

Yeoh had declined to comment when asked by reporters yesterday on the controversy, saying that it “has nothing to do with the youth and sports ministry, and this is a youth and sports ministry event”.

She was speaking then to reporters at the youth and sports ministry here after launching the Sport Satellite Account 2022, an accounting system that provides detailed information on the sports industry and measures its contribution to the nation’s economy.

Various parties have highlighted the possibility of preferential treatment and conflict of interest in the selection of Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd (Asia Mobiliti), which is headed by Yeoh’s husband, M Ramachandran, as one of two firms to run a nine-month proof of concept (POC) for a DRT project.

Yesterday, it was reported that the MACC was investigating new leads into a Selangor government contract to a company co-founded by the husband of a Cabinet minister.

An MACC source said recent complaints and information received by the anti-graft agency had led to new leads being discovered, with investigations ongoing to determine the authenticity of this information.

The investigation comes after MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki previously said the agency did not find any wrongdoing in the preliminary investigation. He said further investigations could be pursued based on new leads.

Yesterday, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said he was open to disclosing the complete details of Asia Mobiliti’s appointment and minutes of the meetings involving the Land Public Transport Agency.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating new leads into a Selangor government contract to a company co-founded by the husband of a Cabinet minister.

An MACC source said today that recent complaints and information received by the anti-graft agency had led to new leads being discovered, with investigations ongoing to determine the authenticity of this information.

The source said a “holistic investigation” is being held “to look into issues of abuse of power and governance in terms of financial compliance in the process of the Selangor government appointing the company”.

The company, Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd (Asia Mobiliti), came into the spotlight last week when questions were raised about possible preferential treatment and conflict of interest in the Selangor government’s selection of the company, with Badanbas Coach Sdn Bhd, for the transit project.

Asia Mobiliti’s CEO, M Ramachandran, is married to youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh.

MACC deputy chief commissioner Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the investigation when contacted, and urged the public against speculating on the case.

The investigation comes in the wake of MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki previously saying that the agency did not find any wrongdoing in the preliminary investigation. He said further investigations could be pursued based on new leads.

Yesterday, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said he is open to disclosing the complete details of Asia Mobiliti’s appointment and minutes of the meetings involving the Land Public Transport Agency.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had also said an investigation could be conducted into the award of the project if a report has been lodged.

Of course DAP’s Hannah Yeoh has no comments

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31, 2024: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh held a media conference in her ministry today but she declined to comment on Asia Mobility’s controversy.

Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd (Asia Mobiliti) is headed by Yeoh’s husband, M Ramachandran, as one of two firms to run a nine-month proof of concept (POC) for a demand-responsive transit (DRT) project in Selangor.

The DAP and Selangor state government have been under heavy public criticisms for failing to go through an Open Tender process to award multi-billion-Ringgit projects.

Of course she has not comment as the award clearly runs foul of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Harapan (PH)’s Open Tender Policy for all government projects.

The image of both the DAP and Selangor state government are being battered by the public, as depicted in the above two images circulated in social-media.

No News Is Bad News reproduces below a news report on Yeoh’s lame excuse to skirt the issue:

Yeoh declines to comment on Asia Mobiliti controversy

Faisal Asyraf-31 May 2024, 12:33 PM

Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh tells reporters the issue has ‘nothing to do’ with her ministry.

Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh has been in the spotlight since it was revealed that a firm linked to her husband was chosen to run a public transport service in Selangor.

PUTRAJAYA: Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh has declined to comment on the controversy surrounding the Selangor government’s appointment of a firm linked to her husband to run a public transport service in the state.

Various parties have highlighted the possibility of preferential treatment and conflict of interest in the selection of Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd (Asia Mobiliti), which is headed by Yeoh’s husband, M Ramachandran, as one of two firms to run a nine-month proof of concept (POC) for a demand-responsive transit (DRT) project.

“No, because that has nothing to do with the youth and sports ministry, and this is a youth and sports ministry event,” Yeoh told reporters when asked to comment on the issue today.

She was speaking to reporters at the youth and sports ministry here after launching the Sport Satellite Account 2022, an accounting system that provides detailed information on the sports industry and measures its contribution to the nation’s economy.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Azam Baki has said the anti-graft agency will not probe the awarding of the DRT project as there was no link between Yeoh’s ministry and the Selangor government.

“It was the state who decided on the matter. It was the (Selangor) menteri besar who decided on it. It was not her decision,” he said at a meeting with representatives from the online media on Tuesday.

Yesterday, menteri besar Amirudin Shari said Asia Mobiliti and Badanbas Coach Sdn Bhd were selected for the POC, which ends in July, as they were approved by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad).

“Even if we were to conduct an open tender, only two companies at that time had permission to do the POC … so questions about whether there should have been an open tender or not are not valid,” he told a press conference at the Seri Selangor Golf Club in Petaling Jaya.

Amirudin also said he is open to disclosing the complete details of Asia Mobiliti’s appointment and minutes of the meetings involving Apad.

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil also said the DRT project has not been awarded to Asia Mobiliti as claimed by certain parties.

Speaking to reporters after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, Fahmi said Asia Mobiliti had only been appointed to run a POC for a nine-month period.

A blessed woman with God’s gift to bear multiple children

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31, 2024: Russian Mrs Vassilyev popped out 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets, over 27 separate labours. The grand total: 69 children.

She’s really a blessed woman with God’s gift to bear children.

No News Is Bad News reproduces below a BBC report on Mrs Vassilyev who gave birth to her children between 1725 and 1765:

Did one woman really give birth to 69 children?

Conceiving and raising one child is demanding enough – yet historical reports suggest that one woman bore 69. Are they true? And will modern medicine push the limit even further?

If British tabloids had existed in the 18th Century, they would have gone utterly barmy over the family of Russian peasant Feodor Vassilyev.

Why? His first wife – whose name is lost to history – holds the widely cited world record for bearing the most children. According to a local monastery's report to the government in Moscow, between 1725 and 1765 Mrs Vassilyev popped out 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets, over 27 separate labours. The grand total: 69 children.

You can only imagine how a present-day newspaper editor would react to such fecundity, especially given the tabloid clamour in recent years over octuplet mother Nadya "Octomom" Suleman, who has 14 children, or the Radford family in Britain, which has 16 kids – and a TV show.

So, is it even possible to birth 60+ children? "It sounds fantastical. I mean, 69 kids? C'mon!" says James Segars, director of the Division of Reproductive Science and Women’s Health Research at Johns Hopkins University.

A woman could, in theory, become the mother to more children than we ever thought possible

I decided to dig a bit deeper into this astonishing – and seemingly dubious – claim, by consulting reproduction experts. My hope was to discover the fundamental limits to how many children a woman could ever naturally have. But along the way, I also discovered that if you take modern science into account, a woman could, in theory, become the mother to more children than we ever thought possible.

In the UK, only around 1.5% of pregnancies lead to twins, and as for triplets, it's a vanishingly small three ten-thousandths of a percent (Credit: Getty Images)

First, let’s consider the mathematics of the Vassilyev report. Would she have had enough time for 27 pregnancies in the 40 year-span that is claimed? Initially, the answer appears to be yes, especially if you take into account the fact that triplets and quadruplets are usually birthed after shorter-than-average terms.

Mrs Vassilyev would have been pregnant for 18 years in total

Some rough calculations: 16 twins times 37 weeks; seven triplets times 32 weeks; four quadruplets times 30 weeks. Add it up, and Mrs Vassilyev would have been pregnant for 18 years of the 40 years – half of the time, or two-decades-worth of craving pickles and ice cream.

But whether that would be possible in reality is another matter.

For starters, could she have been fertile enough over such a long time period? Women typically go through menarche at around age 15, when their ovaries begin releasing usually a single egg every 28 days. This ovulation continues until the egg supply, insofar as we know, is exhausted at menopause, the typical onset of which is 51 years of age.

Well before menopause, though, women's fertility plummets. "The percentage chance of having a baby per cycle when a woman is 45 [years old] is about 1% per month," says Valerie Baker, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Stanford School of Medicine.

As women get older, egg quantity and quality diminish. Halfway through fetal development, unborn females have as many as seven million immature egg cells, but they are born with closer to only one million eggs. Only a few hundred thousand eggs then persist into adulthood. And of these legions, technically known as follicles, something like 400 ever mature and eventually ovulate, assuming a 30-year span of potential childbearing.

The last of these eggs, ovulated late in a woman's fertility window, have far higher chances of accruing damage and mutations, such as chromosomal abnormalities. Many pregnancies with these atypical eggs self-terminate.

"Most women don't get pregnant past 44, 42 [years of age]," says Segars. "But you'll occasionally hear of people pregnant in their late 40s."

The ability to become pregnant goes down with each pregnancy, as successive labours take their toll

What’s more, the ability to become pregnant goes down with each pregnancy, as successive labours take their toll out on a woman's reproductive anatomy. And if Mrs Vassilyev were breastfeeding, as might be expected for a peasant who could not afford to keep wet nurses about, her body would not ovulate. This built-in, biological method of birth control would lengthen the odds even further for her getting pregnant as often as she apparently must have for 69 crumbsnatchers.

Feodor and his wife, therefore, would have had to be extremely lucky (or, arguably, unlucky) to have kept hitting the mark into her 50s.

Surviving labour

The hurdles for ushering 69 children into the world hardly stop there, however. The winding down of a woman's "biological clock" makes a lot of sense from an evolutionary perspective, for carrying and delivering a child is an incredibly difficult task made harder with age.

"Nature would want to make limits," says Baker. "Pregnancy is the most physically rigorous thing a woman's body ever goes through."

The burden of labour is what really begins to undermine the credibility of Vassilyev's 69 children claim – especially considering the setting of hundreds of years ago, out in the Russian countryside.

SPL

Multiple twins or triplets could in principle allow for high numbers of children, but the health risks are great (Credit: SPL)

In developed nations, modern obstetric care, such as medically necessary caesarean sections, has slashed maternal mortality rates. In the UK, just eight women per 100,000 live births die due to pregnancy-related issues while pregnant or within six weeks of ending a pregnancy, according to the most recent statistics from the World Bank. Meanwhile, in one of the poorest countries on the planet, Sierra Leone, the rate is 1,100 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.

Assuming Mrs Vassilyev survived 27 labours is accordingly dubious. "In the past, every pregnancy was a risk to the mother's life," says Segars. Notably, the risks for serious, deadly complications, such as hemorrhaging, skyrocket with multiple births such as quads.

"Every pregnancy back then was a complication, even a singleton," says Tilly.

An awful lot of nippers

Mrs Vassilyev's multiple conceptions of twins, triplets and quadruplets further strains credibility. Fetal twins and their more numerous permutations come about in one of two ways: either multiple ovulated eggs are successfully fertilised by sperm – so-called fraternal twins – or a single fertilised egg divides into two or more viable embryos, leading to identical twins with the same genetic code.

A propensity to have twins runs in families, so could Mrs Vassilyev have been extreme example?

Overall, these events are very rare. In the UK in 2012, for instance, the chances of birthing twins stood at just 1.5% of pregnancies; triplets, a vanishingly small three ten-thousandths of a percent, and quadruplets or more, just three instances out of 778,805 maternities, according to statistics compiled by the Multiple Births Foundation.

True, a propensity to have twins does run in families, so Feodor's wife could arguably have been just an extreme example. But overall, the odds for Mrs Vassilyev to have somehow conceived and then survived the cranking out of 16 twins alone – let alone the quads – seem astronomical. "Even just the 16 sets of twins? I'd be shocked," says Jonathan Tilly of Northeastern University, who is investigating oocyte stem cells for their use in infertility and women's health (which we'll hear more about later on).

SPL

Modern fertilisation techniques mean births of countless children could, in theory, be possible (Credit: SPL)

Yet another red flag in the Vassilyev tale: supposedly 67 of those 69 children survived infancy. Infant mortality was high in the 18th Century for full-term singletons, and dismally more so for higher-order births, who are almost always born pre-term and less healthy. "Even if you had four sets of quads today, I'm not sure they'd all survive," says Segars.

Finally, there’s one question that beggars belief: what woman would want to do this? "Just think of the stress!" says Baker.

Segars agrees. The last reason he doubts the Vassilyev claim? "Sanity! I couldn't imagine living in that house."

If it were true after all, however, the daunting childcare duties could be part of the reason why after decades of marriage, the Vassilyev couple split up. Old man Feodor took a second wife, who allegedly had "only" 18 children. Talk about tabloid fodder.

Brave new world

So what is the actual limit? Answering that question today is complicated because the "natural" limits to offspring from an individual woman no longer strictly apply.

For starters, assisted reproductive technologies (ART) developed in the late 1970s has led to a spike in twins, triplets and so on. (“Octomom” Suleman, for instance, used ART.) The fact that surrogate mothers can now carry the biological fetuses of other people also potentially increases the maximum number of children possible within one family.

SPL

One researcher believes that it might one day be possible to switch on a woman's ability to produce vastly more eggs (Credit: SPL)

The fact that surrogate mothers can now carry the biological fetuses of other people potentially increases the maximum number of children possible within one family

But perhaps most intriguingly, research findings in the last few years hint that the outer limits of female reproduction could be much greater than we can imagine. Recent studies suggest woman's ovaries contain "oocyte stem cells" that, if properly stimulated, might allow her to produce eggs in almost unlimited number.

Tilly and colleagues have documented these cells in creatures ranging from flies to monkeys and, in 2012, humans, too. While oocyte stem cells do not produce eggs in humans, they do in other creatures. Female flies make fresh eggs routinely this way.

While many doctors in his field harbour doubts, Tilly believes the mechanism in women could, in principle, be switched on, helping women whose existing egg supply is in dire straits or prematurely exhausted from cancer treatment, for instance.

In theory, women could be more like men – with the capability of mothering hundreds if not thousands of children

If that hypothetical procedure does turn out to be possible, consider this extreme scenario: fertility drugs could be used to induce ovarian hyperstimulation, wherein multiple follicles mature and ovulate at once. These bunches of eggs could then be surgically removed and fertilised in vitro, outside the body, for subsequent surgical placement into the uterus of an army of surrogate mothers, who would carry the foetus (or foetuses) to term. Each one could potentially have twins – or more.

From a reproductive perspective, then, women could therefore be more like men – with the capability of mothering hundreds if not thousands of children, leaving Mrs Vassilyev in the dust.

Tilly makes clear that his research is not in any way intended to open the doors to women having thousands of children. The idea is to aid the fertility of those who are struggling. Still, he's hopeful it might level the playing field when it comes to fertility across the genders.

Men can father hundreds of children: what if science could allow women to do the same? (Credit: SPL)

After all, human males produce millions of sperm daily throughout their lives, meaning they have essentially no natural limit to how many children they might sire other than available, ovulating partners. The conqueror (and possibly inveterate rapist) Genghis Khan likely fathered hundreds of children across his continent-of-Asia-spanning empire approximately 800 years ago; genetic evidence implies some 16 million people alive today are descended from him.

As soon as we start talking about the infinite possibility of female fertility, people get crazy – Jonathan Tilly

"Theoretically, men can father children into a very advanced age and if they start having children young, then you can get the Genghis Khan model," says Tilly. Assuming his research fully pans out, when it comes to practically answering the question of biological progeny, "male fertility doesn't really have a limit," Lilly says, "and women's doesn't, either."

Clearly, this scenario of mothers with countless children would cause quite a stir if it comes to pass – perhaps even more so than the 69 children of Mrs Vassilyev. Would a man who fathered scores of children nowadays raise the same hackles, though, and if not, is that fair?

"People treat unlimited male fertility with a shrug, because everyone knows we can do it," says Tilly. "As soon as we start talking about the infinite possibility of female fertility, though, people get crazy." He feels a sense of perspective should be kept and that the equality women have deservedly sought in recent decades should apply to procreation as well. Says Tilly on the matter: "There really should be no difference between the sexes."
