Did he win by fluke in August state elections?

PAS assemblyman dies, by-election in Penang

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24, 2024: The Sungai Bakap PAS assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff died in the Seberang Hospital in Penang today.

Zamri, who was admitted to the hospital on May 1 with stomach inflammation, died in hospital ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at 1.38pm.

This means the Election Commission (EC) will call for a by-election after it is officially informed of the vacancy in the Penang State Assembly.

In the August state elections, Zambri won the seat for the first time for the Taliban-like PAS.

The outcome of the by-election will determine whether PAS had won the seat by fluke or that the extremist religious party had gained root in politics in the Chinese majority state.

PETALING JAYA: PAS’s Sungai Bakap assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff has died.

Penaga assemblyman Yusni Mat Piah said Zamri breathed his last at 1.38pm while in intensive care at the Seberang Jaya Hospital in Penang.

“He will be laid to rest at 6pm this evening at Masjid Sungai Acheh in Nibong Tebal,” said the PAS man in a Facebook post.

Zamri was admitted to Seberang Jaya Hospital’s intensive care unit on May 1 due to stomach inflammation.

The first-time assemblyman was elected to the Sungai Bakap seat during the August state election last year.

The Nibong Tebal PAS chief won the seat with a 1,563-vote majority in a straight fight against Pakatan Harapan’s Nurhidayah Che Rose.

He first contested for a seat in 2018, losing the race for the Sungai Acheh state seat by a mere 416 voters to PKR’s Zulkifli Ibrahim.

Earlier today, Penang PAS chief Fauzi Yusoff denied rumours that Zamri was in a critical condition, saying this was not true.

The state opposition leader said the Sungai Bakap assemblyman was stable and in “better condition” though he still needed rest and treatment, Sinar Harian reported.
