1MDB’s permission sought to release legal documents
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17, 2023: Rosli Dahlan Saravana Partnership (RDS), a former 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) panel of lawyers, is reported to be seeking 1MDB’s permission to share certain dicuments with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Online news portel, MalaysiaXpress (formerly NewMediaHit), reported today that RDS informed the High Court today.
Is 1MDB all-powerful, above the law and its permission is required for documents in a criminal probe?
What is there to hide if 1MDB’s financial transactions are above board?

MACC is seeking documents from lawyers suspected of accepting bribes in the Goldman Sachs and AmBank settlement agreement concerning 1MDB
KUALA LUMPUR — Rosli Dahlan Saravana Partnership (RDS) has reached out to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), their former client, seeking permission to share certain documents with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the High Court here heard today.
These documents sought by MACC are related to the US$6.5 billion bond settlement between Goldman Sachs, Ambank and the Malaysian government.
The law firm’s partner, D. Palpanaban said this in an affidavit which was filed on Monday (16 Oct) in response to MACC’s application before the High Court to compel the firm to hand over these documents.
“The firm has written to our former client, 1MDB, on 16 October seeking its consent to disclose privileged and confidential material,” said the lawyer, adding that the firm was served with copies of the MACC legal action on 13 October.
“The firm shall be filing its substantive response to the application in due course after the counsel (retained by the law firm for the present matter) has the opportunity to advise us.
“Thus, the firm reserves our rights,” Palpanaban said.
He read out this part of the affidavit during the case management before High Court Judge K. Muniandy, who then set 9 November for mention.
Yesterday, the MACC requested to obtain documents from two lawyers suspected of accepting bribes and receiving proceeds from unlawful activities in the settlement.
The request was made in two applications filed at the High Court on 11 October.
The MACC named Chetan Jethwani and his law firm, Chetan Jethwani & Co, as respondents in one application, while Rosli Dahlan and RDS were named respondents in the other application.
Chetan is representing Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in a civil case, while Rosli represented the former prime minister in a case related to the Jana Wibawa project.
The MACC has asked for 10 documents from the respondents, including their appointment letters as lawyers for Goldman Sachs (Chetan) and 1MDB (Rosli), their bank account statements, and their companies’ bank account statements.
The MACC argues that these documents are necessary to identify the role and actions of the two lawyers who are suspected of conspiring with Goldman Sachs and other parties in a scheme that reduces asset recovery in the settlement to be paid to the Malaysian government. — MalaysiaXpress
