KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18, 2023: Are electric cars or vehicles (EVs) really safe from fires?

To date, there had been 393 verified fires worldwide, the EV Firesafe database (as at Sept 14), includes 74 incidents that are being investigated and 21 that have not been verified.

A 2020 Tesla internal report (not verified independently) suggested there was one Tesla fire for every 205 million miles (330 million kilometres) travelled.

But what is terrifying and shocking is that a Tesla EV caught fire while it was parked in Puchong, Selangor, on Monday.

Without the EV being used and motionless, it also caught fire.

View the above two video clips for some insight and knowledge on the safety of EVs.

Really, how safe are EVs from fires?

PETALING JAYA: A Tesla electric vehicle caught fire in Puchong last night (Oct 16), according to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.

Its assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said on Monday (Oct 17) that the car parked by a roadside in Jalan Puchong Jaya had suddenly caught on fire.

He said the department received an emergency call at 8.32pm on Monday. Seven personnel from the Puchong station were deployed to the scene.

“Upon arriving, the Fire Department found that (the incident) involved a Tesla that was 70% burnt and no one was injured.

“The fire was completely extinguished by the Fire Department and (the case has been) handed over to the forensic department for further action.

“It is understood that the owner of the vehicle parked it there to get some food," he said, as reported by Astro Awani.
