KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has yet to receive any formal resignation letter from Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh amid speculation that he intends to step down from his party post.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party's leadership would not rely on social media posts or unverified claims, stressing that there had been no official notification or "black-and-white" confirmation regarding the matter.
"There is none. As the party's secretary-general, we do not base our actions on what is said on social media or circulating hearsay," he said when asked whether Umno headquarters had received any information on Akmal's alleged resignation.
This comes amid media reports that Akmal had expressed his intention to resign not only as Umno Youth chief but also as Merlimau assemblyman, according to sources close to the party.
The sources claimed that Akmal had informed a group of Umno Youth leaders of his intention via a WhatsApp message yesterday while he was in Shanghai, China.
Speaking in his personal capacity, Asyraf said differences of opinion within the party were normal and should not be a reason for leaders to resign.
"This is not as the secretary-general, but as an elder brother to Akmal, whom I was also responsible for placing in that position. Differences in views are normal.
"I was once Umno Youth chief myself. Datuk Sumadi can bear witness — at one point, my views were not accepted by all members of the Supreme Council, but that did not mean we had to resign or lose spirit. That is part of the tradition of organisational life," he said.
He added that disagreements were common, but Umno had always been guided by consultation and consensus.
"Sometimes our views are accepted, sometimes they are not. What is most important in Umno is that we are guided by syura — we may agree to disagree, but in the end we reach a collective decision."
Previously, Akmal had hinted at the possibility of stepping down from his position, saying he may have reached a point where he should make way.
In a Facebook post, Akmal said he had done his utmost to convey his message and suggested that any shortcomings may lie with himself, adding that it might be time for him to withdraw.
His comments come amid a series of high-profile interventions in party and national politics.
In recent months, the Umno Youth chief has been vocal about reassessing Umno's role in the unity government, urging party leaders to consider moving into opposition if core "red lines" on race, religion and royalty are breached.
He has also pressed for greater Malay unity through cooperation with Pas, reflecting ongoing debates within the party over strategy and identity.
Akmal's public stance has at times put him at odds with top Umno leadership and political allies, even as he frames his calls as articulating the sentiments of the grassroots. - NST

YOU ARE RIGHT, AKMAL. THE PROBLEM IS YOU. JUST GO.
For as long as Dr Akmal Saleh has been in the public eye, he has been little more than a rabble-rouser and street fighter. That, unfortunately, is nothing new in Umno Youth.
Akmal has delivered the same tired rhetoric, played the same mundane political games and relied on confrontation rather than leadership. When given the opportunity to chart a different course, to mature and rise above the usual Umno Youth theatrics, he chose not to. He simply repeated what had been done before - louder, but not better.
As Umno Youth chief, Akmal has failed - and failed miserably. Not because the task was impossible, but because he lacked the vision, restraint and depth required for the role.
To his credit, he finally admitted as much when he said: “Perhaps the shortcomings lie within myself. Perhaps the time has come for me to step down.”
On that, Akmal is absolutely right.
He should know what to do next.
Just go. Make everyone happier - including Umno members themselves. - fs
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9, 2026: Socio-political news website The Coverage today posted a report titled Akmal to Resign as Umno Youth Chief – Only 51 Out of 190 UMNO Divisions Supported Leaving Madani Govt.
If the report is accurate and proven to be true, then that must be 2026’s best news for multi-racial Malaysians and Malaysia.
The racial and religious bigoted Umno youth chief Dr Akmal “Dr Ham/I Am Malay First” Saleh is a thorn to national unity and harmony, and to the so-called Madani Unity Government (UG).
Akmal is good riddance to bad rubbish in the UG!

Akmal to Resign as Umno Youth Chief – Only 51 Out of 190 UMNO Divisions Supported Leaving Madani Govt
9 January, 2026
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Salleh is reportedly set to announce his intention to resign from his position as Ketua Pemuda Umno Malaysia as well as his role as the Merlimau state assemblyperson
“When the Malays have spoken, and the party has made its decision.
“As someone who loves this party deeply, I accept the party’s decision, but what is the meaning of a leader if we do not respect their voices?
“With full humility, I feel that I need to take full responsibility for this party that we all cherish.
“Insha’Allah, upon my return from Shanghai, I will relinquish all my positions in the party as well as my position as an elected representative.”
In the same message, Akmal also expressed gratitude to all Umno Youth members and leaders, while referencing his efforts to push the party to exit the government — a move that was subsequently rejected by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“I take responsibility for everything that has happened.
“We have voiced the concerns of the grassroots and brought them to the highest level of the party with one goal: to ensure Umno remains in the hearts of every Malay.
“But we did not succeed. This is no one’s fault, but I take it as my own failing and weakness,” he added.
Awaited at KLIA
Last Saturday, Akmal, who chaired the special Umno Youth Convention, mobilised members to support his call for Umno to align with PAS in the opposition bloc.
It is understood that this matter was also presented during the Umno Political Bureau meeting on Monday.
Following Zahid’s rejection of the proposal, Akmal posted a cryptic message implying “retirement,” which then drew challenges from Pakatan Harapan leaders for him to actually step down.
According to another source, at the end of the convention, Akmal requested a list of Umno divisions nationwide that supported his call to leave the government.
“Out of 190 Umno divisions, only 51 expressed support,” the source claimed, while sharing a screenshot from the WhatsApp group of Umno Youth division chiefs.
The screenshot reportedly showed that all 14 Umno Youth divisions in Kelantan supported Akmal, but in Melaka itself, only four out of six division chiefs took the same stance.
Malaysiakini understands that Akmal is scheduled to return this afternoon, with a group of Umno Youth leaders believed to be waiting for his arrival at KLIA.

Umno Youth secretary Hafiz Ariffin today denied rumours that Dr Akmal Saleh is resigning as Umno Youth chief and Merlimau assemblyman.
Rubbishing such speculation, Hafiz said he was in fact travelling with Akmal to Kinabatangan, Sabah, to help Umno campaign for the upcoming by-election.
“It’s not true,” he told FMT.
“In fact, we are heading to Kinabatangan now for (tomorrow’s) nominations for the by-election.”
Malaysiakini had earlier quoted sources as saying Akmal had expressed his intention to resign as Umno Youth chief and Merlimau assemblyman.
They said the Melaka executive councillor had informed a group of Umno Youth leaders of this in a WhatsApp message while in Shanghai, China.
The purported message stated that he would be relinquishing all party positions as well as his Melaka state seat after returning from Shanghai.
Akmal hinted at quitting his post on Wednesday, saying “perhaps it is time for me to step aside” after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi rejected his call for the party to leave the government.
Zahid also rejected Akmal’s call for Umno to revive its cooperation with PAS under the Muafakat Nasional charter.
The Umno Youth chief had presented the resolution in an Umno political bureau meeting on Monday.
