PKR - Reformasi or Reformati?
KUALA LUMPUR, May 10, 2025: Only PKR grassroots can stop the above from becoming true - MADANI (Mummy Azizah, Daddy Anwar and Nurul Izzah).
On May 24, PKR grassroots will elect their deputy president and it is a contest between the incumbent and radical reformist Rafizi Ramli and Anwar Ibrahim’s daughter, Nurul Izzah.
Only the grassroots can decide their and the party’s fate.
Dr Wan Azizah was PKR president, now her husband Anwar is PKR president, next is daughter Nurul?
Is PKR set to become a Family’s political party or a dynasty?
So, will the party grassroots dump a party faithful and reformist like Rafizi?
They did it in 2022 when they gave Rafizi a thumping landslide victory over the loser - Saifuddin Nasution who was Anwar’s choice for deputy.
Will the party grassroots remain rooted and untied for Reformasi (Reformation) or Reformati (Dead Reformation)?
James Chin
Political analyst James Chin, a professor of Asian Studies at the University of Tasmania, said with Nurul Izzah stepping forward to contest, Anwar is giving ammunition to other political parties and his political opponents.
"Anwar is so blatant, allowing the daughter to contest. Even if Nurul is competent, it is public perception that counts in politics, especially during elections. It is a bad look for Anwar," said Chin.
Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad deflected nepotism charges by not permitting his children to take up senior posts in the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) when he was in charge of the party, Chin noted.
"If I were Nurul, I would not take up this contest and if I were Anwar, I would put a stop to it,” Chin said. “Doing this will permanently hurt her brand.”
