Syed Saddiq has no moral ground to criticise Zahid’s case, says DAP leader

Dr Boo Cheng Hau says the Muda president should see through his own court cases first.

Johor DAP leader Dr Boo Cheng Hau (left) said Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman should have directed his ire at the Attorney-General’s Chambers over Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s conditional discharge.

PETALING JAYA: A Johor DAP leader who had previously cautioned Pakatan Harapan against welcoming Muda into the coalition says Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has no moral ground to criticise Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s conditional discharge.

Dr Boo Cheng Hau said the Muar MP should first see through his own criminal breach of trust charges.

Syed Saddiq has been charged with abetting the Bersatu Youth wing’s former assistant treasurer, Rafiq Hakim, in the commission of CBT of RM1 million.

The Muda president is also charged with misusing RM120,000 in donations for the 14th general election as well as two counts of money laundering amounting to RM100,000.

Boo, who is a Johor DAP committee member, said some leaders in the party, including state chairman Liew Chin Tong, had pushed for the former youth and sports minister to defend the Muar parliamentary seat.

Boo also said he was against giving Muda the Tanjung Piai parliamentary seat and the Puteri Wangsa state seat last year because of Syed Saddiq’s CBT charges.

Giving Muda seats went against the principle that those who had been charged should not be holding any public or party offices as it could be used as ransom to bargain for personal benefits, he said.

“Frankly he has no credibility to comment on Zahid’s DNAA,” he told FMT, referring to the discharge not amounting to an acquittal granted to the deputy prime minister over corruption charges.

“He should have stepped aside in the last general election and should have led by example.”

Boo was commenting on Muda’s decision to withdraw support for the current unity government following the decision on Zahid’s case.

Syed Saddiq had said that the decision to grant Zahid a conditional discharge had made it difficult for Muda to remain with the government bloc as the party did not want to allow Malaysia to normalise corruption.

But Boo felt that Syed Saddiq was barking up the wrong tree, as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had nothing to do with the decision.

The justice system – namely the Attorney-General’s Chambers, public prosecutor and judiciary – and the government are independent of each other, he said.

“It’s ironic that Syed Saddiq wants the government to intervene when proper reform means these two branches must be independent.

“Syed Saddiq should have directed his ire at the AGC, not Anwar. And certainly not cite Zahid’s case as the reason to leave the government when the government has nothing to do with it.”

Boo said a constitutional amendment is needed to allow for top civil servants to be vetted and approved by a specific parliamentary committee before the candidate’s name is submitted to the King for approval.

He said if this had been done a long time ago, it would have prevented accusations that the prime minister had meddled in the legal process.

Quit your Muar seat for by-election, Syed Saddiq told

PETALING JAYA: Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been challenged to vacate his parliamentary seat and force a by-election, following Muda’s decision to end support for the unity government.

The decision left the government without a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, just a day after Pakatan Harapan had restored the supermajority by winning the Pulai parliamentary seat in a by-election.

RSN Rayer of DAP who is MP for Jelutong, said the loss of the two-thirds majority due to Muda’s exit would hurt efforts to carry out legal and political reforms that require constitutional amendments.

He expressed disappointment that Muda had left the day after the Pulai success. “Why are they doing it now after the people of Johor have shown us that they want a stable (unity) government?” Rayer said.

Another MP from Pakatan Harapan, R Yuneswaran of PKR, said Syed Saddiq must vacate the Muar seat because he had won by partnering with PH.

“Muar folks voted for him simply because he was with PH, and PH voters will be very disappointed with him now,” Yuneswaran told FMT.

Yuneswaran, who is MP for Segamat, said PH would want to have a by-election in Muar.

However, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim, also of PKR, said that he respected Muda’s decision and conveyed his good wishes to Syed Saddiq and the party.

“It is a good development if Muda wants to build a ‘third force’ in Malaysian politics by giving healthy competition to the PH-BN alliance and Perikatan Nasional.

“A third force that comprises Muda and Parti Sosialis Malaysia is a healthy development in Malaysian politics that would give wider options to Malaysians,” said Hassan.

Muda has one seat in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat through Syed Saddiq.

He had first been elected in 2018 on a PH ticket as a member of Bersatu which was then in the coalition. He formed Muda after Bersatu left PH in 2020, causing the fall of the PH government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Syed Saddiq narrowly won re-election in 2022 as a Muda candidate, against challengers from PN and BN, when PH decided not to contest the seat.

After the elections, PH and BN formed the unity government in an alliance with East Malaysian parties and currently holds 147 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, one short of a two-thirds majority.

As an ally of the coalition, Muda had provided support for confidence and supply measures.

The opposition comprises PN with 74 seats through PAS (43) and Bersatu (31).

Syed Saddiq, who announced earlier today that Muda was leaving the government bloc, said he had informed the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat. The Speaker will decide where Syed Saddiq will now be seated.

The Dewan Rakyat is meeting in special session from tomorrow for the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan.

This comes after her party’s exit from the unity government on Sunday.

Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz is the sole Muda representative in the Johor state assembly.

PETALING JAYA: Puteri Wangsa assemblyman Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz has been placed in the opposition bloc in the Johor state assembly, said Johor Speaker Puad Zarkashi.

“Based on media statements by the party (Muda) president and a letter from Chen Kah Eng, the chief whip of the Johor state assembly from the PH bloc, the seat of Puteri Wangsa assemblyman Amira has been moved to the PN bloc,” Puad said in a statement today.

Amira is the sole Muda representative in the assembly.

On Sunday, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman announced the party’s exit from the unity government after expressing dissatisfaction with the abrupt halt of deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s corruption trial.

Syed Saddiq claimed the government’s actions were seen as normalising corruption, and he was unwilling to compromise with such “unprincipled behaviour”.

Yesterday, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul said he had received a letter from Syed Saddiq applying to change his seating position in the lower house.

The statement also said newly elected Simpang Jeram assemblyman Nazri Abdul Rahman will be sworn in on Thursday during the third meeting of the second session of the 15th Johor state assembly.
