Anwar, why then the Chinese and China-bashing at home?

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21, 2025: Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister (PMX) Anwar Ibrahim says Western world’s hypocrisy has resulted in the US losing ground in South-east Asia (SEA) compared to China.

So, at home, why is he allowing Chinese and China-bashing by the racial and religious bigots, even by his Government-in-partner Umno.

Why is he not taking action under his 3R (Race, Religion, Royalty) albeit selectively.

Now, who’s the hypocrite? Cakap tak serupa bikin! (Talk not the same as make (action)!)

PMX has, yet again, himself exposed himself as a NATO (No Action Talk Only) at home and on the international arena.

No News Is Bad News reproduces below a news report on what Anwar reportedly said, a social media post that is now in circulation on WhatsApp and a news report on a police probe on the display of China’s flags at a cultural event (Really, what threat or harm has that done to deserve the police’s precious time to investigate):

LONDON, Jan 21 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has highlighted a “trust deficit” between the Western world and emerging economies, or Southeast Asia, due to its hypocrisy on certain geopolitical matters.

In an interview with UK-based Financial Times, he pointed to the Western world’s support for Israel’s military attacks against Palestinians in Gaza.

“There is a trust deficit among emerging economies because big powers have not followed the ground rules of basic international law,” he was quoted saying.

Similarly in Southeast Asia, Anwar said the West had talked big about democracy and reform but did nothing to help.

“Nothing was done to assist [the region]. There’s engagement only in trade and investment,” he added.

Anwar said that the United States has lost ground in the region compared to China, suggesting that its eyes may have moved to Europe due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We engage well with the US but it does not engage the region as actively as it did in the past. China in that sense takes a more positive attitude,” he reportedly said, pointing to senior Chinese officials who visited Malaysia in recent times.

“They give better access, you can meet them easily. We send ministers there, they send ministers.”

Despite that, Anwar said the US is still a valued investor in Malaysia, especially in the semiconductor industry.

“It’s better for smaller economies such as Malaysia to extend its [ties] with China,” he was quoted saying.

“The only contentious issue is the South China Sea [where China has conflicting territorial claims with some Asean member states] where we are engaging well and taking a strong position.”

Anwar also said that under Malaysia’s chairmanship, Asean does not necessarily need to be confrontational with China — as the bloc needs the superpower as an ally.

“Why do we need to be tough? We disagree on many foreign policy issues with the US but we want them to be an important ally.

“Similarly with China I don’t think it’s a matter of being tough against a strong, big neighbour,” he reportedly said.

From social media WhatsApp:

US has lost ground to China in south-east Asia - Malaysia’s Prime Minister

The US has been so consumed by the proxy war in Ukraine that it has allowed its attention towards Asia to slip, Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia’s prime minister, told the Financial Times.

This neglect of its relationship with ASEAN has led to the US losing ground to China in south-east Asia, he said.

“We engage well with the US but it does not engage the region as actively as it did in the past. China in that sense takes a more positive attitude,” said the PM.

He defended the decision of middle powers such as Malaysia to engage increasingly constructively with China and welcomed increased Chinese investment in infrastructure, saying: “It’s better for smaller economies such as Malaysia to extend its [ties] with China.”

The PM also played down concerns over Donald Trump’s planned trade tariffs, convinced that “reason will probably prevail,” noting that there are too many US conglomerates and companies that have so much interest in and dependence on foreign trade and investments.

Police probe after China flags seen on ‘longest’ parade dragon

The parade dragon, said to be the longest in Malaysia, was part of a celebration for the Muar Tiong Hua Association’s 20th anniversary.

A video clip showed the parade dragon being used in a procession to celebrate the Muar Tiong Hua Association’s 20th anniversary.

PETALING JAYA: A parade dragon which bore China’s national flag along with the Jalur Gemilang in Muar, Johor, has led to a police investigation being opened.

Muar police chief Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the parade dragon was part of a procession for the Muar Tiong Hua Association’s 20th anniversary celebration. The dragon was said to be the longest in Malaysia.

“Based on police monitoring during the procession, it was found that the parade dragon was decorated with the Jalur Gemilang on its right while its left featured the flag of China,” he said, according to Bernama.

The organisers have been summoned to assist in the investigation, under laws against causing public alarm, and on the display of foreign flags in public places.

Last month, Tangkak police investigated the use of a rocket replica which featured a flag of China.

A similar controversy arose three months ago after China flags were waved at a procession in Teluk Intan, Perak, during the International Guan Gong Cultural Festival.

The Guan Gong Cultural Association apologised, saying the Chinese flags were displayed by foreign delegates on their own and were not planned by the organisers.
