Towering inferno … an annual feature for New Year Eve countdown in Penang’s Menara Komtar
Budget displays of fireworks indicate stressed domestic and global economies
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan, 2025: Ushering the New Year on the eve night traditionally features magnificient and spectacular fireworks displays globally.
In Malaysia, specifically in Penang island’s George Town, has always been the expected fireworks display atop the 66-storey Menara Komtar that houses state and federal government office.
However, the 2024-2025 fireworks display was significantly shorter and less magnificient and spectacular, or in short subdued.
The annual fireworks display has for the last decade been sponsored by The Top rooftop/tower restaurant which is usually packed yearly by merrymakers who dine for the countrdown to the New Year and fireworks display highlight.
The subdued display is a clear sign of the struggling and challenging economy of the state and country, and globally as well.
To remain in business, many are adopting austerity and prudent measures to ride the tide of a stressed global economic growth.
No News Is Bad News reproduces above and below, images of the short fireworks display taken from the comfort of a hotel room specifically rented for a night to capture the annual moment of merrymaking:
