Why not all Muslims, irrespective of race? What Madani Unity Government? What national unity is this?
Bumiputera does not exist in the Constitution
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9, 2024: Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister (PMX) Anwar Ibrahim says his Government is looking into Bumiputera status for Indian Muslims.
Is that what the so-called Madani Unity Government (UG) is about?
There are so very pertinent points here:
> BUMIPUTERA does not exist in the Federal Constitution; and
> WHY only Indian Muslims? Why not all Muslims irrespective of race?
So, multiracial Malaysians who treasure peace and national unity, come the necxt general election which must be held in 2027, think very, very carefully when you cast your votes.
No News Is Bad News reproduces below Prof Dr James Chin’s take on Anwar’s Bumiputera status for Indian Muslims, notall Muslims:

Dear DSAI, thank you for deepening the rift between Muslims and non-Muslims. These Indian Muslim want to be categorised as bumiputera for the economic and political benefits. Many of these Indian Muslims have infact registered their children as ''Malay'' for many decades.
It is commendable that you continue to erect a higher wall between Muslims and non-Muslims. I would have rather that you grant bumiputera status to all poor Malaysians, regardless of race/religion. Bumiputera is an administrative category rather than a Constitutional one (not many people know this. the word bumiputera does not appear in the Constitution). Then you can claim to have gradually built a cohesive and united Malaysia.
I suppose that is not politically realistic for you because your vision extends only until next GE. We need more discrimination in Malaysia, with one group receiving economic benefits while non-Muslims are left to look after themselves, with occasional ad-hoc help from the government.
I am of course realistic enough not to expect you to reform the system overnight, but you should give the message that the bumiputera and non-bumiputea categories are founded on assisting the lower class to advance. There is a perception that being Muslim makes it considerably easier to obtain bumiputera status. So, if these Indians were not Muslims, would you even consider them for bumiputera status?
I understand that many Malays believe economic benefits and political power are birthrights, but that is another issue. I hope you don't try to confuse Malaysians.
Congratulations on surviving for two years. I hope that these Indian Muslim bumiputera vote PH in GE16. This is the least they can do for you after all the economic benefits you gave to them.
PS. Malaysia's best known mamak who is the longest PM did not grant them bumiputera status.
