KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1, 2024: Restoring Umno to its former power for future generations is not an immediate task and could require two to three more general elections, says its vice-president Johari Ghani.

In his winding-up speech at the 2024 Umno general assembly here on Aug 24, Johari said the process begins with the current leadership and members.

“And, God willing, I am confident and I believe we can achieve this if all of us are sincere and dedicated to the cause of reviving Umno,” he added.

With racists and religious bigots dictating Umno politics, God willing, Umno will become politically irrelevant like its Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition partners, MCA and MIC.

It’s Umno youth chief Dr Akmal Salleh was even made a “Datuk” after raising and issuing numerous public threats that threatened national unity and harmony.

Lawyer and social activist Siti Kasim said: "I recently saw a TikTok video where he (Akmal) was seen calling the Malays to be ready. He was seen sharpening a parang ... this is something the police must act on.

"It is like he is instigating the Malays to create problems. Islam never teaches us all this," said Siti.

A senator has asked why Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has yet to be investigated for sedition after posting a picture of himself holding a sword on Facebook. Akmal had posted the picture, taken during a recent trip to Japan, on March 14. The picture was captioned: “No matter what, we will not waver from our stance. Better to die standing than live kneeling.”

Umno’s political dominance six decades of political dominance started to detriorate some 11 years ago after a lightning arrester/ antenna on the Penang Umno building broke and killed a motorist on Jalan Macalister (view the above video clip).

Since the bad omen, Umno has lost ownership of the building.

In the 15th General Election (GE), Umno was left with only 26 parliamentary seats in the 222-seat Parliament - a political disaster for the party, to say the least.

Come the next GE which must be held in 2027, Umno is likely to be rejected by multiracial Malaysians if it continues with its racial and religious politics.

Also, not forgetting Umno's support for the national kleptocrat and corrupt, the disgraced and shameless former prime minister Najib "1MDB" Razak, who is also former Umno president, now languishing in prison.

Tawfik Yaakub of Universiti Malaya calls for Umno’s leaders aged 60 and above to give way to new blood.

Ariff Aizuddin from Universiti Teknologi Mara said the next three general elections will be critical for Umno as the public will be watching their every move.

PETALING JAYA: Umno vice-president Johari Ghani’s target for Umno to return to political dominance after two or three general elections is a realistic target, say analysts who believe this shows the party leadership’s awareness that they can no longer be arrogant.

Tawfik Yaakub, a political analyst from Universiti Malaya (UM), welcomed Johari’s statement and praised him for his bravery in admitting Umno will need a long time to fully recover.

If Umno remains arrogant and claims strength merely based on its place in the unity government, it will face harsher trials in the 16th general election (GE16), he told FMT.

Tawfik said Umno will need to refresh its leadership and called for its leaders aged 60 and above to give way to new blood.

The old leaders must make way for newer faces. Umno also needs to change its electoral system from one based on representation to direct nominations for its leadership,

 he said.

Meanwhile, Ariff Aizuddin from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UTM) said Umno also needs to win both Malay and non-Malay hearts.

“Umno can use this time to think about why the formerly dominant party was pushed out by voters and conduct various post-mortems to identify the point at which they lost support.

This will also make the party more humble and open to criticism, he said.

Ariff said the next three general elections will be critical for the party as the public will be watching their every move.

As such, Umno must renew its narrative of struggle and mobilisation, and not be fully reliant on the Malay-Muslim agenda, he said.

Ariff added that Umno should be friendly and inclusive, and take a page out of Pakatan Harapan’s experiences.

(Look at) how they have fought for the public’s welfare and have not been obsessed with divisive politics and the Malays to the detriment of other more critical aspects, such as the economy, he said.

Yesterday, in his winding-up speech at the Umno general assembly, Johari said both the party’s leadership and grassroots must fully utilise this long period of recovery, including to apologise to the Malays for their mistakes in administration.

Umno vice-president Johari Ghani says the process begins with the current leadership and members, who need to be sincere and committed to the cause.

Umno vice-president Johari Ghani says restoring the party’s dominance requires a collective effort from all party leaders, not just the party president.

KUALA LUMPUR: Restoring Umno to its former power for future generations is not an immediate task and could require

two to three more general elections, says its vice-president, Johari Ghani.

In his winding-up speech at the 2024 Umno general assembly here today, Johari said the process begins with the current leadership and members.

And, God willing, I am confident and I believe we can achieve this if all of us are sincere and dedicated to the cause of reviving Umno, he said.

Johari also said restoring Umno’s dominance requires stopping all internal fighting, and shared responsibility among party leaders, not just party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

It must be shared by all 191 division leaders, over 22,000 branch leaders, and all the leaders on this stage here, he said.

In his opening speech at the party’s general assembly yesterday, Zahid urged party leaders and members to leave their echo chambers and face the reality that the party is not as dominant as it once used to be.

He said Umno must dare to take on new ideas and perspectives to maintain its relevance in the political landscape, which he described as becoming more complex.

Umno suffered its worst electoral defeat in history in the 2022 general election when it won only 26 parliamentary seats, down from 54 four years earlier. It also struggled in last year’s state elections, winning only 19 of the 108 seats it contested.

In his winding-up speech, Johari also said that Umno should not rest on its laurels just because of its past successes and history.

If we have wronged the Malays, we must apologise. If we have failed in our responsibilities during the 60 years we have governed this country, we must apologise, he said.

He added that Umno must become more dynamic, progressive, and representative of all Malaysians, remaining moderate and clean.
