PN loses Nenggri to BN-Umno! A rejection of Taliban-like governance?

‘Wrong candidate’ caused PN defeat, says insider

A source in Perikatan Nasional says Barisan Nasional’s candidate was more popular among the youth, while the PN candidate was known only in mosque circles.

Rival by-election candidates Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani (BN) and Rizwadi Ismail (PN) together as voters went to the polls today.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional chose the wrong candidate leading to its defeat at the Nenggiri by-election today, according to a coalition source.

The party insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told FMT that PN candidate Rizwadi Ismail was found to be popular only with the congregations at the mosques.

However, Barisan Nasional fielded the right candidate in Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, who won the seat with a comfortable majority of 3,352 votes. Azmawi secured 9,091 votes while Rizwadi managed only 5,739 votes.

The PN source said Azmawi was very close to the youth in Nenggiri and Gua Musang, and had sponsored youth events.

Azmawi also leveraged on his position as a board member of the South Kelantan Development Authority, which set up 70% of the facilities in Gua Musang.

Which is why the youth vote swung his way, the source said.

PN also suffered internal dissent over the choice of candidate, the source said. Bersatu had mooted two candidates but PAS was not too keen on them because of their experience with Azizi Abu Naim, who won in 2022 on a Bersatu ticket.

The party stated in June that he had ceased to be a member, which led to the seat being declared vacant, causing the by-election.

PAS said Bersatu had a bad reputation and pushed for a former PAS member. It wasn’t a good idea. Maybe if PN fielded either one of the Bersatu members we proposed we would have stood a better chance, the source said.

Another liablity in the PN campaign was Annuar Musa, the PN election director for Nenggiri, according to Hisyamuddin Ghazali, an activist linked to Pakatan Harapan.

He said Annuar not only came off as arrogant, but one who liked to show-off his wealth which saw him rejected by the voters.

The decision to recycle leaders like Annuar did not have any significant impact, he said in a Facebook post.

Hisyamuddin, who vied for the Kuala Krai seat in the 2022 general election, also claimed that the schism between the Bersatu and PAS grassroots, due to the candidate selection, had contributed to PN’s loss.

GUA MUSANG: Barisan Nasional successfully reclaimed the Kelantan state assembly seat of Nenggiri today, securing a thumping majority of 3,352 votes in a by-election to overturn the coalition’s loss by 810 votes last year to Perikatan Nasional.

The official results, announced by the returning officer Nik Raisnan Daud at the Gua Musang district council here, were:

Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani (BN-Umno) 9,091
Rizwadi Ismail (PN-Bersatu) 5,739
Majority: 3,352
Electorate: 20,259
Turnout: 73.88%

BN won 17 out of 20 polling stations: Tohoi, Pos Simpor, Sungai Puian, Sungai Jenera, Sungai Wias, Sungai Asap, Meranto, Bertam Baru, Jeram Tekoh, Renok, Kuala Sungai, Bertam Lama, Star, Perasu, Serian, Limau Kasturi, and Jerek. PN only won three polling stations: Kesedar Limau Kasturi, Ladang SEDC, and Pasir Tumboh.

Nenggiri had been won by BN for four consecutive elections since 2004 before losing to PN last year.

With Azamwi’s victory today, the federal governing coalition now has three members on the opposition bench in the Kelantan state assembly. The other two are Galas assemblyman Syahbuddin Hashim of BN and Kota Lama assemblyman Dr Hafidzah Mustakim of Pakatan Harapan.

PAS (37 seats) and Bersatu (5) have an overwhelming majority in the 45-member assembly.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17, 2024: Barisan Nasional (BN)-Umno’s by-election victory in the Nenggri state seat in Kelantan tonight is a relief to multiracial Malaysians and Malaysia.

Not that Malaysians, especially the Malays, love Umno but there is no other choice.

Between Umno and the racist Perikatan Nasional (PN)-Bersatu led by the unpatriotic Muhyiddin “I Am Malay First” Yassin, it is hoped that it is a sign of Malays waking up to reality, rejecting religious extremism.

PN-Bersatu is backed by the Taliban-like PAS which ridiculously campaigned that Malays must show proof that they are PAS members to go to heaven!

And it has even created an issue out of sportswear and called for the revocation of the citizenship of Olympics athletes who did not cover up.

It is still too early to conclude whether the Malays have woken up from the ridiculous Green Wave racial and religious extremism but for the BN-Umno to win a by-election in the PAS-stronghold Malay-majority Kelantan is a gargantuan political achievement.

Multiracial Malaysians pray and hope that the Umno victory is an indication of Malays’ rejection of PAS and Bersatu’s racial and religious politics that threatens national unity and harmony.

Has PAS overplayed its racial and religious extremism that are akin to Taliban-like governance? Lets hope so.

There is still hope that Malaysia may not be governed by Taliban-like governance after the next general election in 2027:
