Has any Malaysian questioned the position of BM in the calls for UEC recognition?

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13, 2025: In calling for the recognition of the of Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), has anyone questioned the position of Bahasa Malaysia (BM) as the national language?

If not, then what are Umno and its racial and religious bigoted youth chief Dr Akmal “Dr Ham/I Am Malay First” Saleh and Prime Mnister Anwar Ibrahim talking about?

LANGKAWI: Any calls for recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and other languages must take into account the fact that Malay is the country's national language, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said that as Prime Minister, the position of the language as contained in the Federal Constitution would continue to be defended and supported.

"There have been various demands regarding language, some want to emphasise English, some want recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

"This is Malaysia. The Malay language is the national language and whoever is trying to bring the message of a language must remember that Malay must be elevated as the language of knowledge that is mastered by all Malaysians," he said after performing Friday prayers at Nur al-Hidayah Mosque, Kuah, here on Friday (Dec 12).

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the dignity of the Malay language must be elevated in accordance with its position in the Constitution and its mastery must be strengthened among the people.

He said that if the principles and issues have been implemented, then only proposals to strengthen the mastery of other languages and recognition of UEC can be put forward.

"If this is clear, to raise the issue of the need to increase the use of English, I agree. But Malay, the language of new technology, the language of AI (artificial intelligence), the language for knowledge, must be strengthened and there must be mastery of the language among all Malaysians.

"All streams… Chinese, Tamil, English, they must master the Malay language and this is also a condition we impose on international schools.

"They can use English as a medium (of instruction) but they must pass and master Bahasa Melayu," he said.

Anwar said any proposal that focuses on one language or race and leaves out the discussion on the country's main language could lead to problems.

Anwar also said any party that submits proposals on matters related to language must comply with the principles of the Constitution, with priority being the mastery of Malay.

DAP deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming had previously said the party would meet with the Prime Minister to discuss the recognition of the UEC. – Bernama

UEC: Howard rebukes Akmal ‘the issue isn’t the National Education Policy but who he wants to attack’

KUALA LUMPUR – Ipoh Timur MP Howard Lee has criticised Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh for claiming that he does not understand the national education policy, particularly regarding the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

According to Howard, who is also a DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) member, Akmal had strayed from the facts when he alleged that the UEC does not fulfil the three conditions required for recognition.

Howard added that many students who sit for the UEC also take the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

He also drew comparisons between the UEC and other international qualifications such as the Advanced Levels (A-Levels) and the International Baccalaureate (IB).

“Do A-Levels meet those requirements? No. Does IB meet them? Does the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) meet them? No.

“And does he even know that most UEC students actually sit for SPM as well? Clearly he doesn’t.

“IB doesn’t follow the national curriculum at all. IGCSE students don’t sit for SPM or STPM. If we follow Akmal’s logic — which isn’t very logical — then all these should also be rejected and not recognised by public or private higher institutions,” he said in a video posted on social media today.

Yesterday, Akmal, who is also Umno Jasin division chief, was reported as saying that the government has no reason to consider recognising the UEC when the certificate does not meet key aspects of the National Education Policy.

He explained that the policy is based on three elements: Malay must be the main medium of instruction, the curriculum must be uniform and nationally oriented, and students must sit for the same examination system.

Howard, however, pointed out that Malaysia has a multi-stream education system, which is a historical, legal and factual reality.

What is odd, he said, is that during the administration of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, several leaders including those currently serving in the Cabinet had previously promised UEC recognition.

Howard questioned whether they, too, supposedly did not understand the National Education Policy.

“Because logically, Akmal himself is inconsistent and actually totally wrong. So the issue for him isn’t really about the National Education Policy.

“The real question is who he wants to attack and why. He says the UEC isn’t aligned. But are A-Levels aligned? Are the IGCSE or IB aligned? That’s not what the policy is,” he said. – 12 December 2025
