At last, Malaysians get their IPCMC to protect them from errant cops and justice

Razali said the country’s police force needed to be brought up to international standards if problems such as deaths in custody, questionable shooting, perceived corruption and the lack of effectiveness affecting the force were to be resolved. ― Picture by Choo Choy May

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — Civil society groups have renewed calls for the government to establish an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), calling the current Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) an organisation without “bite”. In a public forum organised by the Bar Council Task Force on IPCMC today and in collaboration with several other human rights groups at the Bar Council’s new headquarters near Dataran Merdeka, they insisted that the EAIC had failed to stop deaths in custody. Other participants included representatives from the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam), Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), National Human Rights Society (Hakam), the Promotion of Human Rights Malaysia (Proham), and Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together (EDICT). Suhakam chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail said in his opening remarks that the police, the power to arrest and detain, as well as the power to use force, need to come under independent oversight to prevent abuse of those powers … for more, go to https://www.malaymail.com/s/1589319/renewed-calls-for-ipcmc-after-failure-to-stop-custodial-deaths

Wow! Kudos to the Dr Mahathir Mohamad (Dr M)-led Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government for having the courage and political will to implement the long-awaited Royal Commission of Enquiry-recommended Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

This must be one of the most significant and historic good governance move by a Malaysian government demi rakyat dan negara (for people and country).

The IPMC would be able to check the discipline and wrongful actions or behaviour of all cops, including the Inspector-General of Police.

The rank and file of the Polis di-Raja Malaysia are thus deterred and cannot continue to behave like in the past - using their powers to intimidate Malaysians like there is no tomorrow.

Hopefully, the IPCMC will be able to wipe out abuse of police power and instill more honesty and professionalism in the force.

Here’s what Dr M reportedly announced:

PUTRAJAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has been upgraded to an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Prime Minister said the move would enhance its role and allow it to investigate complaints more holistically.

He said this was one of the decisions made in the fourth meeting of the Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption here on Friday (Sept 21).

There have been calls for an IPCMC to be set up in the past, as the EAIC has limitations and will not be able to take action against misconduct, other than making recommendations. - The Star Online
