All the more reason to teach PH-DAP a lesson in governance in KKB by-election

Vote for anything but PH-DAP, the Taliban-like PAS, BN-Umno and the racist Perikatan Nasional (PN) led by the unpatriotic Muhyiddin “I Am Malay First” Yassin.

All the more reason to teach PH-DAP a lesson in governance in KKB by-election

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1, 2024: DAP today is a far cry from the days when it was in the Opposition.

There is not a single protest of racial and religious bigots who threaten national unity and harmony.

Umno youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh is free to say or do anything he likes and the so-called Madani Unity Government (UG) takes no action against him for all his utterances that threaten national unity and harmony.

So, Malaysians, especially Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) voters, seize the opportunity on May 11 to teach Pakatan Harapan-DAP (PH-DAP) a lesson by dumping it.

Send a strong message to PH-DAP that the rakyat (people) are the boss.

Remember, whether PH-DAP wins or loses, the power equation in the Selangor State Assembly is not affected.

But dumping PH-DAP may jolt the UG to wake up and reform their administration for the better or be kicked out in the next general election that is due in 2027.

KKB voters! Rise and tell PH-DAP loud and clear - do not take the rakyat’s support for granted. Serve with dedication and honesty. Use your ballots to protest the lack-of-political will in the PH governance.

Say no to racial and religious bigotry and corruption, not “free” the world’s biggest kleptocrat, the diisgraced and shameless jailbird Najib “1MDB” Razak.

A Student who dabbles in the left side of politics

 DAP Malaysia

Introduction

The Democratic Action Party (better referred to as DAP in Malaysian politics) has been no stranger to Malaysian politics. They have largely remained in opposition for 53 years until GE-14 when the newly-formed Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, which comprised of: The Peoples Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat [PKR]), National Trust Party (AMANAH), Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU) and the Democratic Action Party (DAP). DAP, with then Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng, focused really hard on anti-corruption and anti-Najib sentiments. While this is noble and all, it really deviates from their original purpose which was set out in the 1968 Statement on cultural democracy: a commitment to the basic values and ideas of social democracy.

Ideologies and disillusionment of DAP

Social Democracy by definition is: a political ideology whereby it attempts to mitigate the market failures of a laissez-faire capitalist model with greater regulation, higher taxes with a general emphasis on the welfare of workers, particularly blue-collar workers. However, the Democratic Action Party (DAP), has been infiltrated by neoliberals attempting to steer and deviate the DAP from its original course. Neoliberalists follow neoliberalism, which is an ideology closely related to the ideas of capitalism with social liberalism. One of the most prominent neoliberals in the DAP is the current National Chairman and former Secretary-General, Lim Guan Eng. During his tenure as Finance Minister under the Mahathir VII cabinet, he has released statements which have made him unpopular with the left wing in Malaysian politics. He mentioned how, “We (DAP) will not support a Capital Gains Tax” and ruled out a wealth tax "to prevent shock to financial system”. These two statements highlight the disillusionment of the DAP from their founding principles which includes the Setapak Declaration and the aforementioned 1968 Statement on Cultural Democracy.

Factionalism in DAP

There are two main factions in the DAP: the Blue Faction (social democrats) and the Red Faction (neoliberals). The Red Faction tends to be more Chinese educated with internalised idea(s) of Chinese Chauvinism. A famous figure would be former Secretary-General and current National Chairman, Lim Guan Eng. The Blue Faction tends to be more English and/or Malay educated with ideals of egalitarianism. A famous figure would be the current Secretary-General, Anthony Loke. The Red Faction in the DAP emphasizes division and racist ideology to push its agenda forward, which includes a strong stance supporting institutions like Vernacular Schools which have been used to divide us since the colonial days. The Blue Faction, on the other hand, emphasizes redistribution of income, a higher minimum wage and a stronger public service system. In recent years, the Red Faction has come out on top in leadership elections, which has led to the disillusionment of Social Democratic members, with their voices being suppressed by the neoliberalist right.

However, since the election of Anthony Loke to the Secretary-General position, Social Democrats are now reviving and are coming back to the DAP - to present themselves as ready to fight against the neoliberal right, and I urge all Social Democrats in this position to fight for a more left-wing DAP - one that will push DAP back to its roots, in the Setapak Declaration.

A Stronger DAP internally means a stronger policy position

Let's face it; Malaysians do not vote for the party that has the better policy - but rather for the personality or they blindly follow their parents in voting for the same party as them without knowing the consequences. However, it is policy, not personality that shapes how a country is. With a Social Democratic Revival in DAP, this means that finally the DAP can unite under one policy platform which has a special emphasis on Social Democratic policies which will truly transform Malaysia into the powerhouse that it is. Malaysia, according to the New Straits Times, is one of the lowest tax revenue collectors in Southeast Asia, with a tax-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio of 11.8% - and this was reported in February 2024. Not to mention that the New Straits Times reported that the number of young millionaires in Malaysia are on the rise, with a 75 per cent increase in millionaires aged 30 and under recorded in 2022 - and this was reported seven days ago, from the time of writing this article. Every ringgit in the hands of the wealthy is a ringgit less in the hands of a poor person, living in poverty who desperately needs it. With a Social Democratic Revival in the DAP, Pakatan Harapan's (PH's) biggest component party, it could spell a new beginning in PH's history; a turn toward social democratic principles. This could mean, greater wealth redistribution, reduction in the wealth gap and stronger public services which will be vital for the advancement of Malaysia.

Closing arguments and an open letter to DAP members

Dear DAP members,

I urge you all to voice your discontentment, with great civility and respect, at the Red Faction and oust them from power democratically. Your party was founded on democratic socialist principles in the Setapak Declaration or the Social Democratic 1968 Statement on Cultural Democracy, and it is time to actually be a real social democratic power in Malaysian politics. Maybe, then, we as Malaysians, can vote for policy rather than personality. Implement that wealth tax, implement that Capital Gains Tax, scrap the GST, increase wages in the public sector and more. Expand the size of government to help everyone who needs it. Trust me, that will pay off in the long run.

With love,

HULU SELANGOR: Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) launched its Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) by-election manifesto containing six offers.

The six offers include establishing a herbal plant technology hub, encouraging KKB citizens to be involved in eco-tourism economic activities, and ensuring the infrastructure of public facilities, government buildings, police stations, and drainage systems is in good and safe condition.

The manifesto also proposes increasing welfare allocations to families of low-grade civil servants, women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and children.

PRM candidate Hafizah Zainuddin, when contacted by Bernama, said the by-election manifesto was launched at the 53rd PRM National Congress held at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) on Sunday (April 28).

The KKB by-election campaign, which entered its second day today, saw a four-cornered battle involving former press secretary to the Minister of Housing and Local Government Pang Sock Tao (Pakatan Harapan), acting head of Hulu Selangor Bersatu Khairul Azhari Saut (Perikatan Nasional), Hafizah and Nyau Ke Xin (Independent).

It was held following its incumbent, Lee Kee Hiong, 58, who passed away due to cancer on March 21.

Sultan Nazrin is new national head of Islam

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1, 2024: Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah has been appointed the National Council of Islamic Affairs (MKI) for two years, from March 9.

His appointment follows Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah wish to step down and make way for the  significant duty and trust to be rotated, symbolising the spirit of shared responsibility among the monarchs as heads of Islam in their respective states to uphold and preserve Islam as enshrined in the Constitution.

Law-abiding-peace-loving Malaysians who treasure national unity and harmony certainly hope that Sultan Nazrin will further clamp down on racial and religious bigots who use/exploit Islam for political mileage, at the expense of national unity and harmony.

KUALA LUMPUR: The sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has been appointed as the new chairman of the national council of Islamic affairs (MKI) for a period of two years from March 9, this year.

Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, said the decision on the appointment was made at the 265th meeting of the Conference of Rulers after the sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed his wish not to extend his service as MKI chairman.

“Despite the call from the Malay Rulers urging His Royal Highness (Sultan Sharafuddin) to continue his noble and excellent service for another two years, the Selangor sultan firmly decided to step down so that the important role and responsibilities as the MKI chairman could be entrusted to another monarch.

“His Royal Highness submitted that this significant duty and trust should be rotated, symbolising the spirit of shared responsibility among the monarchs as heads of Islam in their respective states to uphold and preserve Islam as enshrined in the constitution.

“The Malay Rulers finally accepted the Selangor sultan’s reasons and wish to not be reappointed,” Syed Danial said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Syed Danial said Sultan Nazrin welcomed the decision of the Rulers and pledged to continue the excellent service of the Selangor sultan with continuous advice and guidance from his brother Rulers.

“His Royal Highness (Sultan Nazrin) also prayed for divine guidance to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to him as the new MKI chairman,” he said.

Sultan Sharafuddin began his duties as MKI chairman on March 10, 2022.

Regulation 2(1) of the MKI Regulations 2022 stipulates that the MKI chairman shall be elected by the Conference of Rulers from among the state Rulers and that he shall hold the position for a two-year period, which can be renewed upon the end of his term.

Don’t use mosques, suraus for political activities, reminds Jais

Bernama-30 Apr 2024, 08:57 PM

The Selangor Islamic religious department says the directive also applies to the ongoing Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign.

Jais director Shahzihan Ahmad said action would be taken against mosque and surau officials who failed to abide by the directive.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic religious department (Jais) has reminded its officials to adhere to the directive which prohibits mosques and suraus from being used for political activities.

The directive covers mosque and surau officials as well as marriage registrars, Jais director Shahzihan Ahmad said.

He stressed that this prohibition, as decreed by sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah previously, was still in effect, and would also apply to the ongoing Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) by-election campaign.

“Mosque officials, surau administrators, and head teachers are responsible for the premises under their control and must fulfil this duty honestly and sincerely without being influenced by any political sentiment,” he said in a statement.

Shahzihan said failure to comply may result in action being taken in accordance with the law.

July 2 fixed for Bar’s application to quash Najib ‘1MDB’ Razak’s partial pardon in SRC case

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30, 2024: The High Court on Friday April 26) fixed July to hear the Malaysian Bar’s application to quash the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) to halve former prime minister Najib Razak’s jail sentence and reduce the fine in his SRC International corruption conviction.

In the application filed by solicitors Messrs Amir & Rajpal Ghai in the High Court last, the Bar which represents 22,000 lawyers practising in Peninsular Malaysia, sought a declaration that the board’s collective decision was unlawful, unconstitutional and void.

It also requested an order of certiorari against the board to quash the FTPB’s decision.

The disgraced and shameless former prime minister Najib “1MDB” Razak is now in prison serving his reduced jail sentence.

He is also facing multiple ongoing charges of stealing from the so-called Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) o 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Bar seeks judicial review to quash Najib’s pardon in SRC case

The Malaysian Bar wants a permanent injunction restraining Najib Razak or his agents from applying for pardon until all criminal charges against him have been exhausted.

Former prime minister Najib Razak’s prison sentence was reduced by the Federal Territories Pardons Board from 12 years to six, and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million. (Bernama pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Bar has filed for judicial review to challenge the decision of the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) to halve former prime minister Najib Razak’s jail sentence and reduce the fine in his SRC International corruption conviction.

In the application filed by solicitors Messrs Amir & Rajpal Ghai in the High Court last Friday, the Bar, which represents 22,000 lawyers practising in Peninsular Malaysia, sought a declaration that the board’s collective decision was unlawful, unconstitutional and void.

It also requested an order of certiorari against the board to quash the FTPB’s decision.

The board and Najib are named as respondents to the application.

The Bar also wants a permanent injunction restraining Najib or his agents from submitting any application for pardon, reprieve or respite to the board until all criminal charges against him have been exhausted.

The Bar said the injunction should remain in force until Najib has publicly accepted responsibility and expressed remorse for his actions.

Bar Council secretary Murshidah Mustafa filed an affidavit in support of the application.

She said the preferential treatment accorded for Najib’s pardon application violated the principle of equality under Article 8 of the Federal Constitution and was irrational under administrative law.

The application was filed in response to a motion passed by members with an “overwhelming majority” at the Bar’s annual general meeting on March 16.

Former Bar president Zainur Zakaria, together with another ex-president, Yeoh Yang Poh, will act as counsel for the Bar.

When contacted by FMT, Zainur said an application to obtain leave of court had been fixed on July 2.

On Feb 2, the board announced that Najib’s prison sentence had been reduced from 12 years to six and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Najib, 70, is currently serving his sentence at Kajang prison and is to be released on Aug 23, 2028.

The FTPB is headed by the king and consists of five members – the attorney-general, federal territories minister and a maximum of three others appointed by the king.

Najib, who has three other criminal cases which are ongoing, began his initial 12-year prison term on Aug 23, 2022 following the Federal Court’s dismissal of his final appeal.

Early this month, he applied to the High Court to compel the government to produce a purported addendum from the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong allowing him to serve his sentence under house arrest.

Justice Amarjeet Singh will deliver his decision on June 5 as to whether Najib will be given leave for the merits of his case to be heard.

With only 5% Chinese support, shameless MCA president Wee throws tantrums in KKB

With only 5% Chinese support, shameless MCA president Wee throws tantrums in KKB

KUALA LUMPUR, April30, 2024: With skin as thick as the Great Wall of China, the shameless Umno-lapdog MCA president Dr Wee Ka Siong continues with its toothless political barks.

Wee bled MCA into the last general election and won only 5% or 665,436 votes nationwide.

Yet, Wee and his party think they are still relevant in Malaysia politics after such a humiliating rejection by voters.

With or without MCA campaigning in the Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) for Pakatan Harapan (PH)-DAP or the so-called Madani Unity Government (UG), it makes no difference.

In fact, MCA is doing a great favour to the UG by staying away from the KKB by-election.

MCA is a “political liability” and their presence may even turn off voters and cost PH precious ballots.

In fact, PH-DAP may even lose the by-election if there are enough protest votes against the UG for its mediocre governance, especially in the handling of racial and religious bigots, like the Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal “KK Mart” Saleh.

Wee Ka Siong Throwing Tantrums – MCA Winning Less Than 5% Support From The Chinese During His Presidency

30 April, 2024

About 40,000 people in Kuala Kubu Baharu will go to the polling stations again on May 11 to vote for a new assemblyperson. The largest constituency in the state of Selangor will see a four-cornered contest following the death of its three-term assemblywoman Lee Kee Hiong from the Democratic Action Party (DAP), who had won the seat in the 2013, 2018 and 2022 General Elections.

After days of playing cards close to chest, DAP finally revealed its candidate – Pang Sock Tao, former press secretary to the Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming. The decision to nominate a Chinese candidate was a strategy to maintain grassroots support for the party, rather than taking unnecessary gambles with a Malay or an Indian candidate.

The ethnic breakdown of Kuala Kubu Baharu’s electorate comprised 46% Malay, 30% Chinese and 18% Indian. The last time DAP fielded an Indian candidate was in 2008, when it lost by 448 votes. The party was smart enough to realize that it could not hoodwink the Malay voters, majority of whom had already made up their mind to vote for Malay-centric Perikatan Nasional – along the race and religion lines.

Thus, fielding a Malay candidate would be a tactical error as DAP will not be able to swing enough Malay voters to offset Chinese votes lost due to frustration or anger. Besides, it’s the job of UMNO-led Barisan Nasional to deliver the Malay votes. This by-election is supposed to test if Malay nationalist party UMNO should remain as a valuable partner in the next 16th General Election (2027).

Likewise, fielding an Indian candidate could create a perception that DAP lacks the confidence of its own Chinese grassroots. Apart from to the party’s existing support base of Indian supporters, it’s the job of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to charm the Indian voters with his dances to the late Tamil cinema superstar MG Ramachandran. Additionally, MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress) is also supposed to deliver Indian votes.

Forget scare tactic from former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy, who has been instigating the Hindus to boycott his former party DAP. The sour grape, ganging up with minions David Marshel and Satees Muniandy, could not even win a seat in the Penang state election. Now aligned to opposition Perikatan Nasional, he demanded an Indian candidate for Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, only to be ignored.

However, Kuala Kubu Baharu isn’t a walk in the park for DAP.  In fact, it could lose the seat. In the 2023 state election, Perikatan Nasional stunningly increased its support to 39% from just 13% captured in the 2018 polls. Those votes came from UMNO, whose voters were upset that they had to work with rival DAP after the formation of Unity Government between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional.

Assuming DAP had received up to 95% of Chinese votes and 10% of Malay votes, it means the party captured 75% of Indian votes in the 2023 state election. The majority of 4,119 votes won by Lee Kee Hiong – translated to 15% of voter turnout – means DAP could lose if 10% Chinese and 5% Indian voters choose to stay at home this round to protest Anwar-led Pakatan Harapan.

Make no mistake. It’s absolutely possible that more than 15% voters (especially Indian) in Kuala Kubu Baharu who had voted in 2023 for DAP, a component party of Pakatan Harapan, to either stay out of this by-election or even vote the Opposition to teach PM Anwar a lesson. Anwar, who allowed racist and extremist UMNO to bully and terrorize Chinese business interests, is increasingly unpopular.

Worse, the prime minister has shown he was more interested in protecting and defending Palestinians and even Hamas terrorists than fellow Malaysian Chinese and Indian. To cling to power, not only UMNO president Zahid Hamidi was allowed to walk away from all 47 corruption charges, Anwar has been evasive when grilled whether crooked Najib Razak will be allowed to be jailed from home.

Fortunately, MCA president Wee Ka Siong came to the rescue. Like a childish cry baby, he throws tantrums – announcing that his party will not campaign for bitter rival DAP. He complained – “After happily insulting MCA, now you want MCA to help campaign for DAP? Do you think MCA has no dignity or feelings, when my party members are insulted by DAP leaders, should I, as the MCA president, remain silent?”

MCA has every reason to be upset. Since the state constituency was created in 1974, it has been held by ethnic Chinese. Except in the 5th General Election (1978-1982), where DAP snatched the seat, Kuala Kubu Baharu had been the fixed deposit of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) for 35 years – till an uprising of angry Chinese community against MCA in the 13th national polls in 2013.

At its peak, the representative of Malaysian Chinese ethnicity captured more than 1-million Chinese votes and won a whopping 31 parliamentary seats in the 2004 General Election. But under Wee Ka Siong leadership beginning 2018, MCA has only 2 seats today. Even then, the miserable Wee had to depend on the 60% hardcore UMNO-Malay voters in Ayer Hitam to keep his seat.

In the November 2022 election, Wee led MCA to win only 665,436 total votes. The party possessed less than 5% support from the Chinese community it claims to represent. Up to 95% of the ethnic has long abandoned MCA in favour of DAP. Yet, it was these 5% votes which MCA thought DAP desperately wanted, leading to Wee arrogantly makes a mountain out of a mole.

Mr Wee and his minions hate DAP not because their Chinese supporters have been snatched away, but rather because MCA leaders have lost important ministry portfolios such as Health, Transport, Human resources and Housing and Local Government. During its glory period in 2004, MCA was given 4 Cabinet Ministers, 8 Deputy Ministers and 4 Parliamentary Secretaries.

Today, DAP has become the new powerhouse with 5 Cabinet Ministers and 6 Deputy Ministers. Essentially, MCA had lost access to gravy trains which enriched its leaders, cronies and family members through corruption or kickbacks in projects and dubious deals. Wee became a billionaire himself through his 47% stake in Hijau Sekitar Sdn Bhd, which was a sub-contractor of PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone) project that exploded into a RM12 billion scandal.

While MCA’s vengeful right hand flashes the protest card against DAP, its treachery left hand actually signals to its hardcore supporters to vote for racist and extremist Perikatan Nasional. That despite racist bigot Muhyiddin said Christians were working with Jews to Christianise Malaysia, whilst Hadi tried to radicalise people with violent Islamic extremism during the 2022 national polls.

It’s worth noting that Chinese traitor Wee Ka Siong was the first to scramble to sign the statutory declaration to support traitor Muhyiddin Yassin as the 10th Prime Minister after the 2022 election which produced a hung parliament. People still remember how backdoor PM Muhyiddin previously launched a political coup to steal the Pakatan Harapan government through treachery and betrayal in 2020.

MCA’s daily war drums against DAP has reminded not only Chinese voters in Kuala Kubu Baharu about the real enemy who is quietly campaigning for Perikatan Nasional, but also diverts attention from Anwar’s poor leadership. The initial despise of DAP silence and Anwar’s indecision has turned into hatred of MCA treasonous and the Opposition’s dangerous racism and radical Islamisation.

Sure, Anwar-led unity government will remain unchanged even if DAP loses Kuala Kubu Baharu. However, it will give MCA the bragging rights to insult 95% Chinese voters who had voted for Pakatan Harapan, not to mention it will embolden the despicable Wee to attack and weaken the government. Wee should have pretended to willingly help DAP, at least to show MCA is a team player.

Like it or not, this by-election could become extremely “racially polarizing” as both Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional have nominated candidates of different ethnicity. It would become Malay versus Chinese contest. MCA’s attack on DAP is a vote for racist and extremist Perikatan Nasional. DAP does not need MCA. But the more MCA criticises DAP, the more Chinese want to vote for DAP.
