Cops finally detain Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh for sedition probe

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5, 2024: So, finally the police found its courage to detain the racial and religious bigoted Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh.

According to news reports, Akmal was banned and detained in the Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) police headquarters this morning.

But Aman (federal police) confirmed receiving two reports on Akmal’s statements on the (Made-in-China) “Allah” socks issue, and that the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

It is not known whether he would also be investigated for the more serious matter of issuing veiled threats to Malaysians, and threatening national unity and harmony.

These are what we are talking about:

Lawyer and social activist Siti Kasim said: "I recently saw a TikTok video where he (Akmal) was seen calling the Malays to be ready. He was seen sharpening a parang ... this is something the police must act on.

"It is like he is instigating the Malays to create problems. Islam never teaches us all this," said Siti.

A senator has asked why Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has yet to be investigated for sedition after posting a picture of himself holding a sword on Facebook. Akmal had posted the picture, taken during a recent trip to Japan, on March 14. The picture was captioned: “No matter what, we will not waver from our stance. Better to die standing than live kneeling.”

He is being investigated under the Sedition Act, says Bukit Aman.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Akmal Saleh today said he had been detained at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters despite being scheduled to give a statement at the Dang Wangi police station tomorrow.

In a Facebook post, the Umno Youth chief said he would give the police his full cooperation.

“Pray for everything to be facilitated. I will not move an inch from our stance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman has confirmed receiving two reports on Akmal’s statements on the “Allah” socks issue, and that the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

It said that the investigation paper will be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers once the probe is completed.

Akmal’s detention comes amid his heavy push for a boycott of convenience store chain KK Mart, which became the centre of controversy after socks with the word “Allah” were found being sold at its Bandar Sunway outlet.

He has continued to spearhead the movement against the chain, despite its immediate apology, the legal action taken against its founder KK Chai and director Loh Siew Mui, and a call from the king not to prolong the controversy.

Since the boycott started, three KK Mart outlets in Bidor, Perak; Kuantan, Pahang; and Kuching, Sarawak, have been attacked with petrol bombs.

Akmal’s actions meanwhile have drawn criticism from many quarters, with former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin urging him to stop.

KK Mart’s Chai also apologised directly to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim for the sale of the socks. The king reiterated at their meeting his warning for all parties not to take advantage of the matter.

The prime minister also reminds the public against exploiting the ‘Allah’ socks controversy to instigate others.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reminded the public against using the controversy surrounding the sale of socks bearing the word ‘Allah’ to instigate others.

GEORGE TOWN: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Dr Akmal Saleh was merely being questioned by police, contrary to claims by the Umno Youth chief that he was detained earlier today.

“I don’t think he was arrested, but was just called in (for questioning),” Anwar told reporters here.

He reminded the public against using the controversy surrounding the sale of socks bearing the word “Allah” to instigate others, saying the government would not compromise on 3R (race, religion and royalty) issues.

“We don’t care who they are, their posts or which party they are from. Do not issue threats to avoid action under the law, especially in 3R-related matters,” he said.

Akmal had said this morning he was detained at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters despite being scheduled to give a statement at the Dang Wangi police station tomorrow.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain later confirmed receiving two reports on Akmal’s statements on the socks issue, and that the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network facilities.

The recording of Akmal’s statement comes amid his push for a boycott of KK Mart, which became the centre of controversy after socks bearing the word “Allah” were found being sold at its Bandar Sunway outlet.

He has continued to spearhead the movement against the chain, despite the immediate apology tendered by its founder Chai Kee Kan, the court action against Chai and director Loh Siew Mui, and a call by the king not to prolong the controversy.

Since the boycott started, three KK Mart outlets – at Bidor, Perak; Kuantan, Pahang; and Kuching, Sarawak – have been attacked with petrol bombs.

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook played down suggestions that developments surrounding Akmal would cause friction in the unity government.

Loke said the police were merely discharging their duties, and “it doesn’t mean that anybody from the government or those belonging to parties in the government cannot be questioned”.

He also said party stalwart Lim Kit Siang had been questioned by the police before, “but we (DAP) did not raise (the issue)”.
