Sultan Nazrin is new national head of Islam

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1, 2024: Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah has been appointed the National Council of Islamic Affairs (MKI) for two years, from March 9.

His appointment follows Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah wish to step down and make way for the  significant duty and trust to be rotated, symbolising the spirit of shared responsibility among the monarchs as heads of Islam in their respective states to uphold and preserve Islam as enshrined in the Constitution.

Law-abiding-peace-loving Malaysians who treasure national unity and harmony certainly hope that Sultan Nazrin will further clamp down on racial and religious bigots who use/exploit Islam for political mileage, at the expense of national unity and harmony.

KUALA LUMPUR: The sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has been appointed as the new chairman of the national council of Islamic affairs (MKI) for a period of two years from March 9, this year.

Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, said the decision on the appointment was made at the 265th meeting of the Conference of Rulers after the sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed his wish not to extend his service as MKI chairman.

“Despite the call from the Malay Rulers urging His Royal Highness (Sultan Sharafuddin) to continue his noble and excellent service for another two years, the Selangor sultan firmly decided to step down so that the important role and responsibilities as the MKI chairman could be entrusted to another monarch.

“His Royal Highness submitted that this significant duty and trust should be rotated, symbolising the spirit of shared responsibility among the monarchs as heads of Islam in their respective states to uphold and preserve Islam as enshrined in the constitution.

“The Malay Rulers finally accepted the Selangor sultan’s reasons and wish to not be reappointed,” Syed Danial said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Syed Danial said Sultan Nazrin welcomed the decision of the Rulers and pledged to continue the excellent service of the Selangor sultan with continuous advice and guidance from his brother Rulers.

“His Royal Highness (Sultan Nazrin) also prayed for divine guidance to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to him as the new MKI chairman,” he said.

Sultan Sharafuddin began his duties as MKI chairman on March 10, 2022.

Regulation 2(1) of the MKI Regulations 2022 stipulates that the MKI chairman shall be elected by the Conference of Rulers from among the state Rulers and that he shall hold the position for a two-year period, which can be renewed upon the end of his term.

The Selangor Islamic religious department says the directive also applies to the ongoing Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign.

Jais director Shahzihan Ahmad said action would be taken against mosque and surau officials who failed to abide by the directive.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic religious department (Jais) has reminded its officials to adhere to the directive which prohibits mosques and suraus from being used for political activities.

The directive covers mosque and surau officials as well as marriage registrars, Jais director Shahzihan Ahmad said.

He stressed that this prohibition, as decreed by sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah previously, was still in effect, and would also apply to the ongoing Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) by-election campaign.

“Mosque officials, surau administrators, and head teachers are responsible for the premises under their control and must fulfil this duty honestly and sincerely without being influenced by any political sentiment,” he said in a statement.

Shahzihan said failure to comply may result in action being taken in accordance with the law.
