In Malaysia, winning a Silver in Rio is a let down to millions of Malaysians, but only if they are …?

In Malaysia, winning a Silver in Rio is a let down to millions of Malaysians, but only if they are …?

UPDATE: Another pro-Barisan Nasional-Umno Malay daily Berita Harian has also published a negative report on the Malaysian pair winning a Silver in Rio.

As for Berita Harian, the flak was over their tweet: “Olympic : Peng Soon -Liu Ying sekadar raih perak (Peng Soon – Liu Ying merely secure a silver)”.

The front page of the print version carried a similar tone. - Free Malaysia Today (FMT)

It is not surprising to Malaysians that Kosmo!, a Bahasa Malaysia publication in the super-racist Utusan Melayu Group, is capable of running down non-Malays, as the group of publications led by Utusan Malaysia has displayed in the past with wanton arrogance.

But for it to run down a Malaysian or national pride is surely crossing the border of being anti-nationalistic.

What are we talking about?

Kosmo! News headline 1
: Peng Soon-Liu Ying hampakan jutaan rakyat Malaysia (Peng Soon-Liu Ying disappoints millions of Malaysians)

So, to Kosmo! winning a Silver medal in Rio Olympics 2016 is a let down to millions of Malaysians and Malaysia.

Yes! That was the news header in Kosmo! on Aug 18, 2016, after the Badminton mixed double-pair of Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying lost their final match to Indonesians Tontowi Ahmad-Lilyana Natsir 14-21, 12-21 in the mixed-doubles final.

In the first place, the World 11th ranked Peng Soon-Liu Ying was given little chance of winning a medal in Rio. But the pair gave their best for Malaysia to reach the finals, and a guaranteed Silver medal.

From the start of the final match, clearly it was a herculean task for the Malaysians but they still soldiered on. The Indonesians were just too mighty for them to tame. The Malaysians had only beaten the Indonesians once in nine previous clashes.

Now, for the information of a grossly ignorant Kosmo! Peng Soon-Liu Ying has created Malaysian Badminton history.

They are the first Malaysian Badminton mixed-doubles to win a medal in the history of Olympics, that too a Silver, for Malaysia. They did not win it for anyone else but for the country, proudly displaying the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) embedded on their “chest” at all times.

Kosmo! News headline 2: Azizulhasni bangkit raih pingat (Azizulhasni rises to win a medal)

That was the Kosmo! heading after Malaysia won its second medal at the games on Aug 16, 2016, with cyclist Azizulhasni Awang taking home the bronze in the men’s keirin event.

Azizulhasni is a first Malaysian cyclist to win a medal at the pinnacle of all sporting events.

It is Azizulhasni’s a major cycling achievement after he finished sixth in London 2012.

Nicknamed the pocket rocket, Azizulhasni is also the only Asian cyclist to make it past the first round in the keirin event, let alone reach the final.

Yes! Azizulhasni, like Peng Soon-Liu Ying, gave his best for Malaysia to win a Bronze medal. A million Syabas (Congratulations) to Azizulhasni.

But, why must Kosmo! give such a negative news header to run down the Malaysian Badminton pair?

Is it because they are Cina Babi (Chinese Pigs)? Malaysians pray and hope not.

Now, we stress this: For any Malaysian athlete bearing the Jalur Gemilang on their attire at Rio, irrespective of race or creed, winning a medal is making Malaysians and Malaysia proud. The colour of the medal is secondary, but it sure feels better with Golds.

If the Kosmo! heading and story was a genuine insensitive oversight by reporters and editors in angling their news report, then the least Kosmo! can do is to apologise for their error in judgment to Malaysians and Malaysia?

Now, Mr Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, what say you? Is an apology from Kosmo! wanting for Malaysian Sports development and progress?
