KUALA LUMPUR, March 21, 2025: Amanah deputy president (Senator) Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa says the elderly Malay man who allegedly slapped a Chinese undergraduate for eating in public during the current puasa (fasting) month is “shameful”.
“That is not the Islamic way and taking the law into your own hands is neither right,” he added.
“Islam is a religion of peace … and all religions also teach us to live with each other in peace and with tolerance. We have had enough of violence in the name of religion.
“Muslims, are therefore, reminded not to tarnish the image if Islam with violence. We must all treasure national unity and harmony and live in peace.
“Always avoid violence and provoking others,” he added.
Mujahid spoke to reporters at a Buka Puasa (breaking of fast) dinner organised at the heritage Masjid Melayu Acheh Pulau Pinang in Geroge Town tonight.
He reminded the culture of peace that Muslims must adhere to (www.unesco.org/iycp or www.cultureofpeace.com www.everlastingpeace.my).
Mujahid summed up the following ways of culture of peace:
> SHARE with others;
> LISTEN to understand;
> PRESERVE the planet;
> REDISCOVER solidarity;
> RESPECT all life; and
> REJECT violence.
“We are thankful for this evening’s successful Buka Puasa. This is the fifth year this multiracial gathering is held in this heritage mosque.
“We hope this Buka Puasa will be an annual event as we want this mosque to be an icon of peace,” he said, adding that the event at the mosque is unique.
“It is a Buka Puasa that is attended by not only Malay Muslims but also non-Muslims,” Mujahid said.
Among those at the Buka Puasa were Penang Cardinal Francis Sebastian, Buddhist association members, Hindu Sangam members, Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association members and foreign dignitaries.
