Yes! 1MDB PM Najib is set to call for a snap general election to consolidate his premiership

After some four months of speculation, there is solid indication that 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) Prime Minister Najib Razak is set to call for a snap general election (GE) to consolidate his premiership.

And the indication comes from no other lesser than Malaysia’s pro-Barisan Nasional (BN) Election Commission (EC).

According to a visual (if authentic) posted in Facebook, believed to be a notice by the EC, the EC is calling for “tenders” or “price quotations” to supply and deliver EC pocket files for use in GE14.

It is widely believed that Najib has weighed all the pros and cons of calling a snap GE14 and is likely to have concluded that his best bet to win GE14 is to exploit the Opposition’s current political weakness - a vastly fractured Opposition.

And Najib’s Umno-led BN is expected to coast to a convincing GE14 victory (meaning doing better than in GE12 and GE13) if the Opposition parties fail to unite for a one-to-one electoral battle against BN.

A landslide GE14 victory or even winning back its traditional two-thirds majority in Parliament for BN would not be surprising, given the current severely split in Opposition votes.

That will only mean Malaysians will have to continue being ruled by the BN regime for the next decade or more.

The run-up to GE14 will no doubt pick up more steam, with the BN continuing to drive the wedge among the Opposition parties who will struggle to unite.

And to unite at such a short time frame is next to impossible. But in Malaysian politics, there are no permanent friends and enemies and the game plan to success is to make the impossible possible.

The question is will that happen to excite Malaysians in GE14 or forever (maybe almost) be ruled by BN?

And when is the GE14? Perhaps in December 2016? Or more likely in March 2017 or May or June 2017 latest?

Malaysians, tighten your seat belts and watch the fun as election fever boils.
