MCA fights for ‘survival’ as Malaysia’s GE14 nears

Remember MCA’s ingenious idea to display ‘love’ for 1MDB PM Najib at its annual general assembly? Where in the world can you find such lackeys?
MCA fights for ‘survival’ as Malaysia’s GE14 nears
Following the politically historic handshake in a court room on Sept 5, 2016, between icon politicians Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysians are finding an overdose of reporting in politics.

That’s because speculation is rife that 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) Prime Minister Najib Razak is likely to call for a snap 14th General Election (GE14) to consolidate his premiership.

Najib has to call for GE14, which is only due in March 2018, as fast as possible - to strike it when it’s hot, so to speak - so as to give the Opposition parties no time to unite.

The Opposition comprises the Pakatan Harapan coalition (DAP, PKR and Amanah), the newly registered Mahathir-Muhyiddin Yassin’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and the Islamist Umno-friendly Hadi Awang-led PAS.

And the traditional Umno lackey, MCA, has since that handshake suddenly found its voice and courage to engage in a political battle of words with their masters!
Even Umno members copied MCA’s show of ‘love’ for 1MDB PM Najib at an Umno annual assembly (of course this picture has been doctored to reflect another message)
The 7-11 (please, don’t mistaken this for that convenient store chain!) MCA, so labelled after it won only seven parliamentary and 11 state seats in GE13, has suddenly woke up from its political slumber, realising that it may be wiped out in GE14.

With Bersatu likely to draw away some or a sizeable percentage of traditional Umno votes to the Opposition in urban constituencies, MCA’s fear of been finally buried politically in GE14 is very real indeed.

Even another Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) ruling coalition partner, the Chinese-dominated Gerakan is also locked in a political war of words in Penang with Umno.

Penang is currenly administered by a DAP-led Pakatan state government that whitewashed all BN coalition partners, except Umno (with 10 seats), in the 40-seat state legislative in GE13.

So, it is not surprising that both the Umno lackeys, MCA and Gerakan leaders, have suddenly found their courage to speak out against their masters.

They have nothing to lose and are now akin to clutching to straws for political survival and relevance (isn’t the two parties already politically irrelevant and dead in Malaysian politics?).
At least, it is now in the open that Umno is at its weakest ever position in BN. Or else, BN coalition partners like MCA, Gerakan and those in East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) will not have the guts to engage in political mudslinging with Umno.

"Watch Nazri closely, MCA man warns Umno

Ti Lian Ker says Nazri Aziz's admission he is close to DAP shows the Umno minister is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

PETALING JAYA: Umno members should be wary of Nazri Aziz now that he has admitted he is closer to DAP than he is to MCA and respects the Opposition party, Ti Lian Ker warned.

Labelling the Tourism and Culture Minister a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, Ti, who is MCA Religious Harmony Bureau chairman, accused Nazri of sucking up to the DAP the way former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has.

“I wonder if Nazri will eventually join the DAP and stand alongside former Umno members?” Ti told FMT, alluding to the likes of Mahathir, former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir.

Mahathir, Muhyiddin and Mukhriz have since gone on to set up Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) which aims to topple Umno and Barisan Nasional.

Ti also took Nazri to task for declaring himself “big” and therefore having the right to be arrogant, stating such childish behaviour would not sit well with voters.

Earlier today, Nazri, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, continued to attack Ti after the latter suggested last week that Umno do away with its fear-mongering along racial and religious lines to gain the support of Malay voters.

In a report by Malaysiakini, Nazri was quoted as saying that the “big” needed to discipline the “small” crew members on a ship, in response to Ti’s advise against belittling the “crew” of the Barisan Nasional “ship.”

Ti went on to state that the fact Nazri seemingly took offence with his suggestion that Umno stop playing the race-religious card showed that Nazri still believed in communal politics at a time when voters were progressing towards a more Malaysian way of life.

The MCA spokesman said whatever advice he gave Umno should be accepted with an open mind and that he only questioned Nazri’s relationship with DAP after the latter had attacked him about his suggestion.

“I said what I have said. It is up to Umno to listen to the advice given. I do not wish to prolong this matter further.”

Ti also dismissed Nazri’s claim that he was dropped from contesting in Kuantan in the 2013 General Election by Chua Soi Lek because the former MCA president wanted to “get rid of him.”

Nazri had also alleged Ti was an executive councillor when Chua decided to “discard” him (Ti).

Ti responded that it was obvious the minister had not done his homework.

“Firstly, I was never an executive councillor. I was a three-term state assemblyman elected in a Malay majority constituency in 1995, 1999 and 2004.

“I was not dropped by Chua Soi Lek. I was dropped because I am a reformist in the party. After being dropped as a state assemblyman, I decided to stand in the Central MCA leadership to bring my desired changes. I succeeded and managed to become a Central Committee Member for the past three terms.

“I have no interest nor did I lobby to stand under both Chua Soi Lek and now, Liow Tiong Lai’s leadership.”

Liow is the current MCA president.

"Nazri: I’m close to DAP, because Chinese rejected MCA

Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz slams MCA's Ti Lian Ker over remarks, saying as 'captain of the ship', Umno needs to 'discipline' rest of BN crew.

PETALING JAYA: The feud between Umno Supreme Council member Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz and MCA Central Committee member Ti Lian Ker went up a notch today with the former admitting he is closer to DAP than MCA, Malaysiakini reported.

The Tourism and Culture Minister said he is willing to have closer ties with DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng because DAP has got the support of the Chinese community in the country.

“I am good with Lim Guan Eng because I respect democracy as the Chinese community chose Lim Guan Eng and DAP.

“So I have to respect democracy and respect them (DAP). Why would I want to respect Ti when the people reject him?

“I am confident even if he were to contest in the general election, the rakyat will also reject him because the Chinese people truly hate people like him,” Nazri was quoted as saying by the news portal.

Nazri was responding today to Ti who said in a report yesterday that the former had kinder words for DAP and “at times I wonder whether he is courting DAP”, when it was all Barisan Nasional parties who had got him elected.

Ti had also claimed that Nazri was “being his usual arrogant self”, criticising MCA, MIC and Gerakan for saying the three parties would never be as dominant as Umno, being unable to choose local winnable candidates to contest in general elections.

Nazri also slammed Ti for challenging him to stand for the Padang Rengas Parliamentary seat without BN’s help in the next general election.

“Why would he ask me to quit BN? I never complained, it is MCA that likes to complain and claim that Umno made them lose.

“If Umno is really to their detriment, then they (MCA) should quit,” he was quoted as saying.

Captain of the ship

Nazri said he had no problems with the MCA leadership but felt that their relationship had been tarnished by some of its members.

“I know MCA leaders well and have a good working relationship with them.

“But boys like these spoil the relationship. My relationship with the MCA president, vice-presidents are very good and intimate,” Malaysiakini quoted him as saying.

Referring to Ti’s comments about Umno being the captain of the ship but needs to respect the crew in steering BN, Nazri said sometimes the senior crew needs to discipline their juniors too.

“I am arrogant because the crew member is arrogant. On a ship, we need to teach discipline. That is why I would like to tell him (Ti), don’t be arrogant because you are small.

“I can be arrogant because I am big, so I can teach him,” Nazri said, according to Malaysiakini.

Nazri accused the MCA Religious Harmony Bureau chairman of trying to get in the good books of MCA President Liow Tiong Lai in order to return as a candidate in the next general election after having been dropped by former party boss Chua Soi Lek in 2013.

“I got to know he was dropped from contesting in Kuantan the last time because (then MCA president) Chua Soi Lek got rid of him.

“He was an executive councillor and Chua Soi Lek discarded him. Even his own party did not want him.

“He is good with (current MCA president) Liow Tiong Lai so he wants to be a candidate (in the next general election) but my advice is if you let him contest in Kuantan, MCA will lose,” Nazri told Malaysiakini.

The feud is believed to have started after Ti’s comment that Umno was stoking fear between the different ethnic groups in the country, by taking on a strategy of race and religion in order to gain the support of Malays in the rural areas, thus affecting MCA, MIC and Gerakan’s support in urban areas.
