Veteran former news editor A Kadir Jasin has pointed out the irony of Umno vowing to fight what they describe as a “Chinese” DAP, while its own president is surrendering the country’s strategic interests to China.
“Strange that at a time when Umno is spreading propaganda for people to fear and hate the ‘Chinese’ DAP, its president is very intimate with China and is giving away strategic and iconic projects to companies owned by the Chinese government,” he said in a blog posting today.
Even though it was former premier Abdul Razak who first opened relations with China during his administration in the 60s, Kadir said Najib’s actions differed from that of his father.
He said the relationship between Malaysia and China during Abdul Razak’s time was one of equals, but this is no longer the case.
“Is Najib consciously or unconsciously killing the legacy of Abdul Razak, who wanted Malaysia and China’s friendship to be one of equals and not China dominating us and our currency?” he said.
Kadir also listed out several strategic assets and projects that have been given to China, with more likely to follow suit:
– The sale of 1MDB subsidiary Edra Global Energy which controls 13 power plants in five countries to China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN)
– The sale of Bandar Malaysia to a consortium that includes China Railway Group Limited (CREC)
– The East Coast Rail project that may be granted to China Communication Construction Company Limited (CCCC)
– The KL-Singapore High Speed Rail that may be granted to CREC
No Malaysia boleh?
Kadir questioned the necessity for these projects to be given to China when Malaysian companies such as Sime Darby, MRCB and SP Setia have a proven track record in completing such projects.
He questioned if the issue was that the country now lacks funds to carry out the projects.
This, he said, is on top of the planned purchase of Littoral Mission navy ships from China.
Kadir claimed Japan had offered its old patrol boats to Malaysia free, but the country did not appear interested, speculating that there would be “no commission” if it is not a new purchase.
“We should be worried about China’s new hegemony.
“Look at how China’s politics have disrupted the Asean consensus on neutrality,” he said.
