Of ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’, ‘Sabah for Sabahans’ ...

Of ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’, ‘Sabah for Sabahans’ ...

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem is proving to be another stern and fearless leader succeeding Pak Uban (white haired uncle) who is now the state’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor).

Adenan, displaying his fearlessness of Semenanjung (peninsular Malaysia)’s big brother Umno, is the reason why Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is still unshakable in Sarawak politics.

And Sarawak remains the only state in Malaysia that Umno has no physical political presence. The other state was Sabah and Sabahans are now living to regret allowing the racist Umno into the state’s political arena.

However, Sabahans have now reignited their political battle cry “Sabah for Sabahans” under former Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal while “Sarawak for Sarawakians” is still as solid as a rock and consolidating against federal politics.

Sabah and Sarawak are considered “fixed deposit states” of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) ruling coalition in every general election (GE).

Come GE14 or a snap general election, will Sabah and Sarawak still be BN’s fixed deposit states? Or, after GE14, will there be political realignments? Time will tell.

Back to Sarawak, then Chief Minister Taib Mahmud had swiftly prevented the raging “Allah” flames from engulfing his state in 2014.

As a Muslim, he had the courage to make such a bold move to set up a religious bureau helmed by a Muslim and a Christian to promote religious harmony.

This made Sarawakians harmoniously comfortable with his leadership.

It was the second time the then PBB chief had, without hesitation, taken a major stand in his reaction to the then ongoing “Allah” row in peninsular Malaysia.

Taib earned the praise of Sarawakians when he defended the use of the term “Allah” by Christians in Sarawak.

In Sarawak, this is the status quo. That cannot be changed. And that is why Pak Uban and PBB helmed the state for 32 years.

The PBB religious bureau in Facebook revealed a general approval for Taib’s assurance to Sarawakians, with one sharing that “our chief minister is the only state BN leader with the courage to stand up to Putrajaya and Umno on the “Allah” issue.” Can anyone, including from Umno, dispute this?

That is why Pak Uban (white haired uncle), as he is popularly referred to by locals, was the state’s undisputed leader – not even Umno or Najib could touch a strand of his hair amid mounting allegations of his family’s unusual wealth.
In the peninsula, Najib can’t even get or doesn’t have the courage to get a Muslim cleric to sit together with other religious leaders in an interfaith committee.

Najib bows to Muslim fanatics or extremists who take the stand that Muslims and Islam are above all others and therefore there is no reason for them to sit at a roundtable to reason.

Generally, all Malaysians should laud Taib for his brave commitment to lead by example for all Malaysians of various faith and race.

And, today, his successor is behaving and doing the same on the national education policy issue.

"STUPID STUPID STUPID: ADENAN TAKES OFF THE GLOVES, USES THE ‘S’ WORD ON NAJIB & UMNO – IT’S STUPID TO PUT MALAY LANGUAGE OVER ENGLISH
Politics | October 17, 2016 by | 0 Comments

KUALA LUMPUR – The prioritisation of Bahasa Malaysia over English in education policies dating back three decades is “stupid” and the cause of graduate unemployment now, said Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

The Sarawak chief minister said the country should have placed equal emphasis on both languages.

“Back then, it was decided that correspondence with the government, if not in Bahasa Malaysia, would not be entertained. How could you have a policy like that?

“That is why so many graduates these days could not get a job because they cannot speak proper English,” he was quoted saying yesterday by local daily The Borneo Post.

Noting the sheer volume of books on science and mathematics published in English, Adenan also expressed his doubts on whether the country’s authority on Bahasa Malaysia — Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka — could cope with the volume of new material daily.

“Are we going to translate all of them? Why do we have to do it twice when you can do it once?” he asked.

Adenan highlighted that Singapore used English as its main language while giving equal attention to Mandarin and the Malay language there, before going on to say that Sarawak should push both English and Bahasa Malaysia.

He pointed out that English was a necessity in international trade, and that contracts were usually written in the language.

“Let’s be practical, and that’s why I say Sarawak must promote English together with Bahasa (Malaysia) at the same time.” he was also quoted saying.

Adenan
This is not the first time that Adenan has called for English to be given more attention.

Last November 18, he announced that the state government was adopting English as Sarawak’s second official language and declaring that official correspondence could be in either English or BM.

On February 15, Adenan was reported saying that Malaysia should adopt English as the second language while keeping national language Bahasa Malaysia as the first language, arguing that the country risks being left behind and looking stupid if it doesn’t join the world in using the language.

On September 10, Adenan said the Sarawak state government will support the formation of English-medium mission and private schools that prioritise education in the world’s lingua franca.

PUTRAJAYA: New political party, Parti Warisan Sabah or Warisan, will be focussed on uniting all Sabahans, said its president Shafie Apdal.

Shafie, the Semporna lawmaker and former cabinet minister said the Registrar of Societies (RoS) had also approved the party’s logo.

Former PKR lawmaker Darell Leiking will be the party’s No.2 while Peter Anthony, Jaujan Sambakong and Junz Wong were named as vice presidents with Loretto S Padua Jr named its secretary-general.

Shafie said Warisan will work with anyone, including other opposition parties, as long as they have a common goal of defeating the Barisan Nasional.

“What is important is not whether the parties can unite, but whether we can unite the people.

“You can have thousands of parties but if the people are not united it will be useless,” he said outside the RoS office, accompanied by Leiking and Moyog assemblyman Terence Siambun.

Shafie had previously said he wanted to take over a Sabah-based political party as a platform to challenge Barisan Nasional in the next general election.

The former Umno vice president had quit the party on July 4, after the Umno Supreme Council suspended his membership on June 24 for allegedly collaborating with the opposition.

Shafie was dropped from the cabinet last year for criticising the mismanagement at 1MDB which raked up billions of ringgit in debt.

He set up Warisan after turning down an offer to join former Umno leaders, Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin, in their new party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).

Leiking resigned from PKR on Sept 21 where he was its vice president while Wong quit DAP earlier this month before signing up with Shafie at Warisan. - FMT
