Opposition unity ... can it be realised for Malaysians and Malaysia? |
When Malaysia’s two political icons, Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim, can sacrifice their bitterness and set aside all animosity, why can’t the rest of Malaysians, especially Opposition party grassroots and leaders.
This was displayed clearly by PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail when she said: “t is not important whether Anwar contests in GE14 or otherwise. It is not important if Anwar becomes prime minister or otherwise.
"It is not important whether he will be getting any rewards. Anwar said, what is most important, is the state of the country."
She was quoted by online news portal malaysiakini as saying as such after she emerged from Putrajaya’s Palace of Justice at the end of Anwar’s Sodomy II review in the Federal Court today (Oct 12, 2016).
Wan Azizah said she shared her husband’s earlier statements that what mattered most would be for the people to change the current government and oppressive system.
1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) Prime Minister Najib Razak is widely expected to call for a snap general election (GE) or GE14 to take advantage of the Opposition parties’ disunity to consolidate his premiership.
And time is really running out for them to unite under a single platform to avoid splitting the Opposition votes in GE14 and thus handing over victory to Barisan Nasional (BN) on the silver platter, so to speak.
To achieve unity for any real chance of toppling Najib and his Umno-led BN, Opposition leaders have no choice but to seriously display real sacrifice to set aside all secondary considerations and selfish personal and party agenda for a united Opposition front to square off with BN in straight electoral battles in GE14.
This is the least they can do in the interest of Malaysians and Malaysia to stop a regime that is slowly but surely transforming their country from a democracy to autocracy of politics.
And it now appears to be the Islamist PAS that is bent on sticking to their Islamic stand so stubbornly, to the delight of Umno.
And this was what was posted in Facebook recently: “Most likely PM Najib will have Hadi of Pas as a new member of BN b4 the 14 GE.Pas will challenge Mat Sabu Amanah Party while Umno n Dr Maha party will fight it out.MCA will not be given any malay majority area n have to fight it out with DAP.Gerakan n PKR will fight it out while poor MIC will fight with DAP's Indian candidates. This is the scenerio n PM Najib may choose either May or June next year for the 14GE .Those young men who have attained 21 yrs recently may miss the chance to vote if they register after Nov this year. This is my observation .” (sic and verbatim)
It sure makes political sense and logic, doesn't it?

“Dr M: (1MDB PM) Najib trying to break my will
Malaysiakini: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has accused Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of attempting to unleash a gastronomical blow to weaken his will.
Recounting how the government withdrew the police escort for him, the former premier claimed there is now a plan to change his officer and cook.
He also alleged that his acquaintances, especially those in the business sector, are being threatened through the Inland Revenue Department.
"If they had paid their taxes, additional taxes are imposed," he said in a blog posting.
Apart from this, Mahathir alleged that those in Proton are disallowed from communicating with him, and businessman linked to him are not permitted to conduct business with the national car manufacturer.
"Najib's aim is for Proton to be bankrupt so that it can be sold for a song," he added.
The former premier claimed the plan is to sell Proton in full to foreigners in order to eradicate the national car industry.
"Only imported cars can be sold in Malaysia.
"Let there be nothing which was started by me. Let the local industry be destroyed as long as Najib is satisfied," he added.”
"PAS: Straight contests if Amanah doesn’t fight us

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan says Amanah cannot expect PAS to give up contesting in its traditional seats.
PETALING JAYA: Straight fights with the Barisan Nasional is a sure thing if Amanah does not contest in seats PAS is gunning for, Takiyuddin Hassan said.
The Islamist party’s secretary-general, however, said the problem is the fact that the PAS-splinter party is insisting on contesting in the general election.
“You can’t expect PAS to give up the seats that are traditionally ours.
“We will not contest in seats that traditionally belong to PKR or DAP, just like in Teluk Intan during the by-election.”
In the 2014 polls, DAP named Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud as its candidate.
Takiyuddin was commenting on Amanah Communications Director Khalid Samad’s statement that straight fights in the impending GE cannot be realised as long as PAS does not perceive the ruling coalition as its enemy.
Khalid also claimed that PAS would have no problems if the BN retained Putrajaya.
Takiyuddin rubbished such claims, stressing that BN was still PAS’ enemy even though it is sitting out the upcoming Bersih 5 rally which, among others, aims to call for Prime Minister Naijib Razak’s resignation.
This, he said, could be proven by the fact that the party fielded a candidate in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections earlier this year.
“The ruling government, and Umno, is the main enemy. Otherwise, why would it remain in the Opposition as we could be rubbing shoulders with Umno,” he said, adding that, with the exception in 1974, PAS never joined the government.
PAS was part of the BN coalition for a short spell from 1974 to 1978.
On a separate matter, the Kota Bharu Member of Parliament also said there was no need for PAS to discuss with DAP’s Lim Guan Eng over its decision to sit out the Nov 19 rally.
Neither can Lim instruct PAS to take part in the rally.
“He is not the spokesperson for Bersih 2.0; Maria Chin Abdullah is.
“We have already decided on the matter,” he said when asked to comment on Lim’s plea for organisations that once supported the electoral reform group, but have since withdrawn their support, to return to the fold.
Takiyuddin had previously said the party would not participate in the rally as Bersih currently had other objectives which were not in line with PAS’ stand."
