What sort of political realignments can come up with from these Opposition parties? Where is the Amanah-DAP combo heading to? |
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) president Muhyiddin Yassin and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim have both confirmed that they will negotiate with the Islamist PAS to strengthen the Opposition.
If they succeed to forge a coalition to do electoral battles with 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) Prime Minister Najib Razak in the next general election (GE) or a snap GE14, who is being seriously threatened?
You don’t need the brain of a rocket scientist to give you the correct answer. Najib’s Umno will be seriously threatened as they fight tooth and nail for Malay votes.
The question is where does this leave Amanah (a splinter party of PAS moderates) and DAP?
The Amanah-DAP combo is certainly an Opposition force to reckon with as seen in the June twin by-elections in Sungai Besar (Selangor) and Kuala Kangsar (Perak).
Amanah even beat PAS in Sungai Besar! And DAP and Amanah are super-friendly close allies (Read this for context: http://victorlim2016.blogspot.my/2016/09/guan-eng-and-mat-sabus-friendship-dates.html).
Obviously, the Amanah-DAP combo will not be able to work with the PAS-Pribumi-PKR Malay trio. That’s because both PAS and DAP have stood their ground that they cannot work together over PAS wanting to implement Hukum Hudud (Islamic criminal law)
And they are also aware that in the realignment of Malay politics for GE14, there must be straight contests between BN and the Opposition for any real chance of toppling the Umno-led BN.
Logically, the Amanah-DAP combo has three choices:
Choice A: To work discreetly with the PAS-Pribumi-PKR Malay trio in seat allocations to avoid multiple contests in GE14;
Choice B: To join BN or work with a new BN coalition in GE14; or
Choice C: To go into GE14 as a third force and decide on a political realignment after the elections. Yes! The run-up to GE14 and political realignments are certainly intriguing, volatile and evolving with much excitement for Malaysians.

"DR M’S GRAND COALITION FORGES AHEAD: IN SHOW OF DYNAMISM, MUHYIDDIN & ANWAR MEET TO TRASH OUT NEXT STEPS

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) pro-tem president Muhyiddin Yassin today attended a court hearing involving PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
This comes after Bersatu adviser and Anwar’s one-time arch nemesis Dr Mahathir Mohamad shook hands with Anwar while attending one of the jailed leader’s court hearings last month.
Met by reporters after the court hearing, Muhyiddin said he was there to give Anwar moral support.
Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after he was last year found guilty of sodomy – a charge he maintains is untrue and politically-motivated.
Muhyiddin also spoke with Anwar at the witness holding room for about 30 minutes, but declined to reveal what was discussed.
He said it is important to build ties with Anwar, given that Bersatu aims to cooperate with Pakatan Harapan to topple BN in the 14th general election.
“We have not met for a while,” said Muhyiddin.
Anwar and Muhyiddin had both held the deputy prime minister and Umno deputy president post before ousted from the party.
“I think it is important for me as Bersatu president to build a relationship (with Anwar) so that a cooperation can be forged… and a strong alliance is formed to face BN in the upcoming general election,” he said.

Pakatan Harapan and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) will hold negotiations with PAS in order to strengthen the opposition, said former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
This, he revealed, was among the topics Bersatu pro-tem president Muhyiddin Yassin and him discussed during a meeting at the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning.
“Yes, we have agreed to negotiate with PAS,” he said when quizzed on this.
Asked if PAS would be part of a new opposition pact, he replied: “Negotiate first, and then we will see our mutual agreements.”– M’kini"
